This Week in Zia Basketball

The Zias will take the next two weeks off before jumping back in to Lone Star Conference action on Saturday, January 3 at West Texas A&M.

Ticket Price Adjustments...Beginning in January, general admission tickets for Greyhound and Zia basketball games will be $4.00 for Adults (out of high school) and $3.00 for Kids kindergarten thru 12th grade. Under kindergarten age are free.

Max named to All-Classic Team...sophomore wing Sharon Max from Fruitland (Kirtland Central High School) was named to the Angelo State Nathan's Jewelers All-Classic Team this weekend. Max had 25 points and shot 9 of 18 from the field in the two games against Incarnate Word and Schreiner. She was also 6 of 7 from the free throw line. Max is currently third on the team in scoring with 8.1 per game and is shooting 91.7% from the free throw line.

The Zias (6-3)...finished up the first semester of the 1997-98 season in strong fashion. ENMU lost a close game at the Nathan's Jewelers Classic in San Angelo, Texas on Friday to Incarnate Word, 59-54. Sophomore Amanda Mendez (San Antonio Madison H.S.) was the leading scorer for the Zias with 17 points, shooting 8 of 13 from the field.

In Saturday's game, the Zias bounced back with a 86-50 win over Schreiner. Sharon Max (Kirtland Central H.S.) was the leading scorer for the Zias with 17 points, shooting 6 of 11 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Freshman Bobbie Wallin (Moriarty) was the leading rebounder with 7.

On Monday night the Zias fought hard in the first half with intrastate rivals Western New Mexico but blew open the second half for an 81-69 win. ENMU was led by Mendez with 19 points. She was one of four players with 5 rebounds. Mendez was 6 of 9 from the field and a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Junior Julie Smith (Albuquerque Eldorado) had 6 assists.

About West Texas A&M...the Lady Buffs are currently 6-3 going into games this week in Hawaii. They are coming off one of their best seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight.

On the Airwaves...95.3 KSEL-FM will be broadcasting several Zia basketball games. Don Elder and Travis Barger will handle the play-by-play and color commentary for the ENMU home games. KSEL will pick up feeds of the Zia road games whenever possible.

Weekly Radio Show...Don Elder will also be hosting the ENMU Coaches Show on 107.5 KSMX-FM every Wednesday night at 7:00 pm from Juanito's Restaurant on Avenue C in Portales. Different ENMU coaches will join Elder to give updates on the progress of their teams throughout the winter and spring.

SportsLook...will broadcast on KENW-TV Channel 3 on Thursday nights. The show, hosted by Dallan Sanders, will take a break for finals week and the holidays. The show will resume when classes resume in January. Sports Look is an ENMU student-run production.

Coming Up...the Zias have a three-day homestand against LSC-South rivals Tarleton State, Texas Woman's, and Midwestern State from Jan. 8-10.
