Rodeo and Softball Finish Up Fall Portion of the Season

(Portales, N.M.) --- The Eastern New Mexico University rodeo and women's softball teams finished the fall portion of their seasons last week.

The rodeo team, under head coach Charles Chambers, made a solid showing at the Texas Tech Rodeo over the weekend. The men's team placed fifth with 82.5 points. Senior Ryan Pratt scored points in steer wrestling with an 8.5 (6th place), just 0.2 off of the winners. The Hounds were able to earn points in the team roping with freshman Kyle Stamps advancing to the finals.

The highlight for the men's team was sophomore Felipe Aragon's second place finish in bull riding. Aragon was one of only three riders not to get thrown in the finals. He had a 154 total.

The Zias came up with 20 points in goat tying. Freshman Kelly Saiz entered the finals with the third lowest score (7.3) but had difficulties in the finals with her tie.

The ENMU rodeo team resumes competition on March 19-21, 1998 at the New Mexico Junior College Rodeo in Hobbs.

The Zia softball team, under head coach Hollie Chadwick, came out of their final exhibition games of the fall, 3-2. ENMU competed in the New Mexico State University Tournament in Las Cruces on Saturday and Sunday.

They lost the first two games - 7-2 vs. Western New Mexico and 5-3 vs. New Mexico State on Saturday - before coming up with three wins - 5-4 in extra innings vs. El Paso Community College on Sat., 2-1 vs. New Mexico State and 9-7 vs. El Paso CC on Sunday.

The Zias will begin spring practice in mid-January to prepare for the University of New Mexico Lobo Invitational, February 6-7, 1998.
