(Portales, N.M.) --- The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team, under head coach Mike Maguire, finished the 1997 season with an 18-14 record and 8 healthy players. The 1997 Zias struggled on and off throughout the season but finished strong winning seven of their last nine matches. They had three players leave the team half way thru the season and lost Krista Robinson at the beginning of the season with a shoulder injury and Jessica Crawford late in the season with a torn left hamstring. That left eight healthy players to finish out the season.
ENMU's season ended last Tuesday with at 3-0 loss to Central Oklahoma in the first round of the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament. The Zias were 7-5 in LSC-South action and the #3 seed in the South.
Stacey Estlund sets two Zia records...In ENMU's 5-game win on November 7 against Tarleton State University, senior setter Stacey Estlund (Clarkston, Wash.) set an ENMU season assist record, with her 70 assist performance, of 1,179 for the season. Estlund needed 68 assists going into the match to break Brandi Reynolds' 1995 record of 1,176. Estlund finished the season with 1,240 assists. She also holds third place with 1,153 assists in 1996.
Earlier this season, Estlund set an ENMU career assist record in the second game of the October 25 match against Abilene Christian. She broke Zia great Barbara Lynn's career assist record of 2,165 that was set in 1986. Estlund ended her ENMU career with 2,393 career assists.
Four Zias named to All-LSC South Team...Estlund was a first team All-Lone Star Conference-South Division selection by the LSC coaches last week. Senior Tara Dougherty (5-11, OH, Clovis), junior Charlene Hunt (5-11, OH, Folsom, Calif.), and sophomore Irma Cobos (5-10, MB, Kermit, Texas) were honorable mention selections.
Three Zias make LSC All-Academic Team...Dougherty, Estlund and sophomore Jamie Vaughan (5-10, MB, Alamogordo) were named to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Volleyball Team. Dougherty is a psychology major. Estlund is a physical education major. Vaughan has not declared a major at this time.
