This Week In ENMU Cross Country

Greyhounds and Zias at Lone Star Conference Championships TBA
at Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas

Zias Win Their First Meet in Recent History...the Eastern New Mexico University women's cross country got their first win in their second season of competition. Under Head Coach Jeff Arthur, the Greyhounds and Zias are in their second season of competition since the program was reinstated in 1996.

The Zias...won the West Texas A&M Buffalo Stampede on Friday, October 10 with 28 team points over West Texas A&M and Oklahoma Panhandle State. Sophomore Vern Samaniego (Sonora, Texas) placed second overall with a 5K time of 21:32. Freshman Mindy Clark (Carlsbad) and senior Jeanne Laizure (Fort Worth, Texas) followed right behind in third and fourth place with times of 21:51 and 21:59 respectively. Sophomore Shilohe Polega (Portales) finished sixth with a time of 22:17, while newcomer Jennifer Voris (Albuquerque) placecd 13th with a time of 25:29.

The Greyhounds...took second in what ended up as a dual race with West Texas A&M. West Texas took first thru fifth place, while the Hounds finished sixth through 10th. Dave Anderson (Sr., Albuquerque) was the top Hound finisher with a 5 mile time of 41:20. Sophomore John Lomasney (Gallup) finished right on his heels with a 41:20 time.

The New Lone Star Conference...the Zias and Hounds are using their five regular season meets to prepare for the 1997 Lone Star Conference Championship Meet on Saturday, October 25 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. With conference expansion, thirteen women's and eleven men's teams will compete for the LSC title.
