Greyhounds Squeak By Lions In Freezing Wind

(Portales, N.M.) --- The Eastern New Mexico University football team squeaked by the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions 10-9 in a freezing wind (wind chill below 10 degrees). The Greyhounds improve to 5-3 overall, 3-3 in the LSC, 2-2 LSC-South. The Lions drop to 3-5 overall, 3-3 LSC, 2-2 LSC-South

The scoring for the Lions happened in the first half. The Lions scored first with 9:26 left in the first quarter when Matt Morris completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Jackson. (David Dell PAT no good.) This put the Lions up 6-0. In the second quarter, David Dell booted a 36-yard field goal to give the Lions a 9-0 lead that they held until half time.

The Greyhounds did all of their scoring in the second half. With 5:40 left in the third quarter, Brian Weimer (Clovis) scored on a 19-yard reverse. (Brian Cocking PAT Good.) This cut the Lion lead to 2 points, 9-7. In the fourth quarter the Greyhounds went ahead for the first time and for good on a Brian Cocking (Los Alamos) 20-yard field goal. The Greyhound special teams was an important contributor late in the game. With 3:10 remaining, Melvin Bedford (Corpus Christi, Texas) blocked a David Dell 45-yard field goal attempt to stop the Lion drive.

The Greyhounds hit the road next week, travelling to Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The Lions are back at home, entertaining Abilene Christian for their Homecoming.
