Zia Volleyball Gets Revenge Against Western New Mexico

(Portales, N.M.) --- The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team exacted their revenge with a seemingly effortless 3-0 win over the Western New Mexico University Lady Mustangs Wednesday evening. The Zias beat WNMU 15-0, 15-5, 15-8 in a match that lasted only 1 hour and 5 minutes. Earlier in the season ENMU had lost to the Lady Mustangs in Silver City, ending their 46-match losing streak.

Eastern took the opening game with little trouble. Zia setter Stacey Estlund had 10 assists to aid the Zias while four players had three kills apiece. In the second game the Zias came up with four blocks to assist their offense. Middle blocker Tina Wehrli had five kills to lead the Zias in game three.

For the match, Wehrli led all hitters with eight kills. Outside hitter Charlene Hunt contributed seven kills. Estlund added 28 assists to her career total (1,483) in her pursuit to become the Zias' all-time assist leader.

Leading hitters for Western New Mexico were middle blocker Veronica Wahlstrom and outside hitter Susanna Luna with five kills apiece. Freshman setter Candida Martinez ( Ft. Sumner) had 13 assists for the Lady Mustangs.

The Zias are now 7-2, while WNMU is 4-5.

Up Next for the Zias...ENMU travels to Angelo State on Friday September 12 to begin Lone Star Conference action. Saturday they take on Abilene Christian in Abilene, Texas.
