This Week in Greyhound Baseball

The Greyhounds (0-4, 0-0 LSC-South)...went 0-4 on their first road trip of the season against NCAA Division I Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Shortstop Loren Wood (Jr., Tacoma, Wash.) and catcher Tyke Posey (Farmington) each had two hits in the Hounds 14-2 loss on Friday. Junior transfer Adrian Tapia (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) took the first Hound loss of the season with seven earned runs, 10 hits, two walks and one strikeout in five innings of work. Senior Stephen Hill (Clovis) made his first pitching appearance since shoulder surgery in August. Hill gave up five earned runs, four hits, two walks and three strikeouts in three innings.

Grand Canyon swept Saturday's doubleheader, 14-3 and 7-4. In game one, Wood, first baseman Zac Fox (Jr., Rialto, Calif.), and right fielder Scott Henry (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) each had two hits for the Hounds. Freshman catcher Seth Martinez (Farmington) hit his first collegiate home run in the game and was one half of the freshmen Farmington battery. Freshman pitcher Victor Hockett (Farmington) threw for four innings in his first collegiate start. Hockett gave up 12 earned runs, 11 hits, six walks and struck out two. Albuquerque Manzano High School product Chris Stewart, another freshman, came in for two innings of relief. Stewart gave up two earned runs, two hits, and one walk.

In game two of the doubleheader, junior Billy Fitzgerald (Yuma, Ariz.) took the loss with four innings of work. He gave up 10 hits, seven earned runs and three walks. Junior Brian Cronk (Cottonwood, Ariz.) threw four innings of relief after starting game one at third base. Cronk worked four innings, only giving up three hits. Starting right fielder Ryan Collins (Jr., Hesperia, Calif.) hit a three-run homer in the top of the third inning to put the Hounds up 4-3.

ENMU wrapped up the trip on Sunday with a 11-3 loss. Freshman Tim King (Carlsbad) got the loss in five innings of work. King gave up 12 hits, nine earned runs, one walk and struck out five. Stewart and sophomore Hank Patalan (Albuquerque) threw three innings of relief. From the plate Posey and Henry had two hits each. Posey, the starting catcher, had all three RBI and a home run. Henry came out of the weekend with the top batting average (.500 - 5 of 10). Fox is second at .429 (6 of 14).

This Week...the Greyhounds open their home season against intrastate rival New Mexico Highlands. The Cowboys, under new head coach Steve Jones, are 0-3 after starting the 1998 season at New Mexico State University. NMHU lost 11-6, 9-6, and 27-6 to the Aggies. Highlands was 17-22 last season and finished fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Coming Up for the Hounds...ENMU takes a four-day road trip to Albuquerque and Denver. The University of New Mexico will host the Hounds on Feb. 12 and 13 at 2:00 pm. Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, a suburb of Denver will be the site on Feb. 14 and 15. Game time on Saturday is noon, with an 11:00 am start on Sunday.

Weekly Radio Show...Don Elder will be hosting the ENMU Coaches Show on 107.5 KSMX-FM every Wednesday night at 7:00 pm from Juanito's Restaurant on Avenue C in Portales. Different ENMU coaches will join Elder to give updates on the progress of their teams throughout the spring.

Sports Look...will broadcast on KENW-TV Channel 3 on Thursday nights. The show, hosted by Dallan Sanders, will resume this week. Sports Look is an ENMU student-run production.
