Gutierrez wraps up Greyhound career

(Portales, N.M.) -- Senior post Angel Gutierrez will play the final home game of his two-year stint at Eastern New Mexico University on February 21, 1998. The 6-7, 215 lb. native of Fabens, Texas, transferred to ENMU from Clarendon College in Texas in 1996. Gutierrez is the Greyhounds leading rebounder this season, averaging 6.0 per game. He has also blocked 21 shots and averages 9.9 points per game. He is one of the top 25 rebounders in the Lone Star Conference this season.

"Angel has good size and presence inside overall. He is a strong offensive threat," said Greyhound assistant coach Rocky Victor.

Gutierrez, a criminal justice major, plans to finish his degree in December and pursue a basketball career overseas. His primary career goal is to return to his hometown and work in the juvenile corrections field. "There are a lot of juvenile problems where I come from, and I hope to go back and help them as much as I can." While home on breaks, he helps out at the local high school trying to keep kids from getting into trouble.

Education is extremely important to Gutierrez, a first generation college student. "I know that my parents are living their college dreams through me, so it is very important that I succeed." The educational system at ENMU is fulfilling for Gutierrez. "Eastern is providing me with a good education, the small classes and closeness with the instructors is good."

Basketball has always held great memories for Gutierrez. His favorite memory of the game came when he was in eighth grade and dunked for the first time. At ENMU, being an instant starter has provided him with great experiences. Angel loves to compete, and believes that the Lone Star Conference is one of the most competitive conferences in NCAA Division II. Gutierrez is very pleased with the coaching staff and his teammates. "(Head) Coach (Earl) Diddle is a great coach. He has taught me a lot."
