VOLLEYBALL (22-8, 9-2 LSC, CLINCHED LSC BERTH )
Eastern New Mexico’s volleyball team had a great week, winning all three matches to improve to 22-8 overall. The Zias won two Lone Star Conference matches to improve to 9-2 in the LSC and clinch second place in the South Division. ENMU also clinched a berth in the LSC Tournament and will host the third place team from the North Division on Tues., Nov. 10 at 7:00 p.m.

ENMU opened the week with a 3-1 win over Wayland Baptist. Game scores were 15-9, 11-15, 15-13, 15-10.

Rachael Grant (Jr., MB, Wenatchee, WA/Columbia Basin College) led the Zias with 16 kills. Irma Cobos (Jr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) added 14 kills and 25 digs. Heather DesMarais (Jr., RS, Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin) had 12 kills and a .345 hitting percentage.

In Eastern’s next match, the Zias edged Tarleton State, 3-2, in an LSC battle in Stephenville, Texas. Scores were 6-15, 15-12, 8-15, 15-10, 15-13. Cobos and DesMarais each recorded 14 kills.

Cobos also provided 16 digs. Grant added 13 kills and junior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) supplied 52 assists and 13 digs. Charlene Hunt (Sr., OH, Sacramento, CA/Sacramento City College) finished with 10 kills, 16 digs and 4 service aces.

The Zias concluded the week by defeating Midwestern State, 3-1, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Game scores were 8-15, 16-14, 15-10, 15-12.

Cobos provided a season-high 20 kills, and had 14 digs, 2 aces and 2 block assists. Maricela Santos (Jr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) hit 14 kills and Hunt added 13 kills. The Zias also received 51 assists and 19 digs from Davison, who set an ENMU record for assists in a season (See article in next column). DesMarais supplied 11 kills, 3 block solos and 7 block assists.

DAVISON SETS ENMU ASSIST RECORD
Junior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, Washington/Columbia Basin College) has set an ENMU record for assists in a season. She has 1,279 assists, breaking the old record of 1,240 set by Stacey Estlund last year. Davison broke the record on Oct. 31, when she totaled 51 assists against Midwestern State.

Davison has played in all 30 matches and all 111 games this season. She is averaging 11.5 assists per game and trails only Deena Victor of West Texas A&M (11.9 assists per game) on this week’s LSC statistical report.

ZIAS REACH 20 WINS FOR 6TH TIME SINCE ‘90
Eastern New Mexico’s 3-0 week brought the Zias past the 20-win mark for the 6th time since 1990. The Zias are 22-8 this year, with one regular season match and at least one LSC Tournament match remaining. All six 20-win seasons in the 1990s have come under head coach Mike Maguire. ENMU’s best season ever was 1993, when the Zias went 33-6 and won the Lone Star Conference championship.

UP NEXT FOR THE ZIAS
Eastern New Mexico concludes its regular season schedule on Sat., Nov. 7 with an LSC match at Texas A&M- Kingsville. Match time is scheduled for 12:00 noon (MST). The Zias return to Portales for an LSC Tournament first round home match on Tues., Nov. 10, against the third place finisher in the North Division. The LSC Tournament match is set for 7:00 p.m. (MST).

If the Zias win their first round match in the LSC Tournament, they will travel to Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. for a semifinal match on Thur., Nov. 12. The Championship match will be played on Sat., Nov. 14. on the home court of the higher seed.
