WOMEN’S TENNIS (AT REGIONAL ROLEX)
The Zias competed at the Midwest Regional Rolex Tournament, Oct. 9-11 in Topeka, Kan. The event was hosted by Washburn University.

ENMU entered three singles players and three doubles teams. There were 64 players in singles and 30 teams in doubles.

Eastern’s top performer was Layla Turner (Fr., Casa Grande, AZ/Union H.S.). She did not lose a game in the first two rounds, defeating Gina Hayes of Northwest Missouri and Ali Moore of Fort Hays State by identical scores of 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Turner was defeated by Yasmin Osborn of Northwest Missouri, the #3 seed, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Julie Stiles (Jr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) won her first match over Angela Scott of Northwest Missouri, 6-0, 6-0. In the second round, Stiles faced 4th- seeded Julie Mavity of Abilene Christian, and lost 6-4, 6-2.

Rozlyn Gorski (Jr., El Paso, TX/Coronado H.S.) edged Megan Barry of Rockhurst College in a 3rd-set tie-breaker, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Gorski lost to Adda Abraham of Drury College in the second round, 6-2, 6-1.

Eastern’s #3 doubles team of Dena Boans (Sr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) and Sarah Pennington (Fr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) reached the quarter-finals. They downed Mendy McMunn and Kerri Murphy of Missouri Southern in the first round, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, then edged Iris Del Rosario and Lisa Graham of Truman State, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, they lost to 3rd-seeded Sanja Milas and Cristina Portas of Northeastern State (Okla.), 6-3, 6-1.

Gorski and MaKenzie McCravey (Fr., El Dorado, TX/El Dorado H.S.) opened doubles play with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Karrie Koehler and Jessica Bell of Nebraska-Kearney. Gorski and McCravey fell to Kelly Springer and Misty Nigh of Washburn University, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round.

Turner and Stiles lost in the first round to Kasey Hawkins and Andi Wildner of Abilene Christian. Scores for the close match were 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.

UP NEXT FOR THE ZIAS
The ENMU women’s tennis team does not play again until Fri., Oct. 23, when the Zias travel to Canyon, Texas to take on West Texas A&M. The match is set for 2:00 p.m. (MST).

Eastern is also scheduled to play Cameron University in Canyon on Sat., Oct. 24. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. (MST). The pair of matches in Canyon will complete Eastern’s fall schedule.
