VOLLEYBALL (19-7, 7-1 LSC)
The Zias won three matches last week. ENMU downed New Mexico Highlands, 15-3, 15-11, 11-15, 15-11 on Oct. 13. The Zias defeated Angelo State, 10-15, 15-11, 15-13, 15-12 on Oct. 16, then swept Abilene Christian, 15-13, 15-5, 15-8 on Oct. 17.

Against Highlands, the Zias breezed to a 15-3 win in the first game, but fell behind 8-0 at the start of the second game, and eventually lost, 15-11. ENMU built a 7-1 lead in the third game and a 9-1 lead in the fourth game before winning both by identical 15-11 scores.

Senior outside hitter Charlene Hunt (Sacramento, CA/Sacramento City College) had 14 kills, a .385 attack percentage and 11 digs against the Cowgirls. Rachael Grant (Jr., MB, Wenatchee, WA/Columbia Basin College) added 10 kills.

Setter Lindsey Davison (Jr., Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) contributed 33 assists and 12 digs. The Zias earned a .248 team attack percentage.

In Eastern’s match with Angleo State, the Rambelles built a 7-3 lead in the first game. ENMU fought back to 7-6, but ASU pulled away for a 15-10 win.

The Zias trailed 6-0, 9-4 and 10-6 in the second game before rallying. Eastern tied the game at 11-11, then scored the game’s final four points.

In the third game, Eastern led 3-0 and 7-5, but Angelo State went on a 7-point run for a 12-7 advantage. The Zias fought back, ultimately winning the game, 15-13.

Eastern began to succeed in blocking ASU in the third game, and continued during the fourth. Junior middle blocker Maricela Santos (Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) finished the match with 15 total blocks on her way to a triple double. She also earned 19 kills and 17 digs.

The fourth game was tied 5-5 when the Zias used a scoring run to take an 11-5 advantage. ASU trailed 14-8 later in the game, but clawed back within two points at 14-12. The Zias then scored to close out the match.

Santos achieved a .351 hitting percentage against the Rambelles. Grant had 16 kills, Heather DesMarais (Jr., RS, Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin) added 15 kills and 6 total blocks, and Irma Cobos (Jr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) supplied 35 digs. Hunt had 14 kills and 29 digs. Davison totaled 61 assists and 24 digs.

Cobos and Grant led ENMU to a 3-0 sweep of Abilene Christian. Cobos provided 14 kills and 9 digs, while Grant registered 10 kills, 8 digs and 4 total blocks.

The Zias took a quick 8-1 lead in the opening game, as Hunt served five straight points. Later, ACU pulled within a single point at 14-13, before ENMU won, 15-13.

Eastern easily claimed the second game, winning 15-5. In the third game, the Zias trailed 7-4, but Hunt served 7 consecutive points for an 11-7 advantage. ENMU concluded the match by taking a 15-8 triumph.

In addition to Cobos and Grant, the Zias received strong performances from Davison (31 assists, 7 digs), Santos (9 digs, 8 blocks) and DesMarais (7 blocks). ACU struggled on offense, producing a meager .007 hitting percentage.

DAVISON NAMED LSC SETTER-OF-THE-WEEK
Eastern New Mexico junior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Setter- of-the-Week for the fourth time this season. Her current award is for games played Oct. 13-17.

Davison contributed 125 assists during the week. She also had 6 kills, a .250 hitting percentage, 43 digs (3.9 per game) and 6 block assists.

She now has 1,085 assists for the season and ranks 4th all-time in single season assists at ENMU. She needs 68 assists for third place and a total of 155 assists to tie Stacey Estlund, who set the record of 1,240 last year.

ZIAS ARE BLOCKING OPPONENT ATTACKS
The Zias asserted defensive control at the net last week, earning 3 block solos and 68 block assists. Maricela Santos was the team leader, with 28 total blocks. Heather DesMarais added 16 blocks for the Zias.

For the year, ENMU has 108 block solos and 386 block assists. Santos leads the way with 38 solos and 121 assists for 159 total blocks. DesMarais has 19 solos and 90 assists for 109 total blocks.

UP NEXT FOR THE ZIAS
Eastern New Mexico continues its 5-match homestand against defending national champion West Texas A&M on Tue., Oct. 20 at Greyhound Arena, at 7:00 p.m. (MST). The homestand ends a week later (Oct. 27), when the Zias take on Wayland Baptist at 7:00 p.m.
