CROSS COUNTRY (LSC MEET)
The ENMU men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Meet, on Sat., Oct. 24 at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The men’s team finished 11th out of 11 teams. The women’s team finished the race in 13th place out of 13 teams.

The LSC Meet concluded ENMU’s 1998 season. It was the third season since Eastern returned to intercollegiate cross country competition in 1996.

Hawk Harris (Jr., Hobbs, NM/Hobbs H.S.) was Eastern’s top runner. He placed 32nd despite very wet conditions, completing the 8K course in 30:05. Other top men’s runners for ENMU were Juan Castanon (So, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.), who took 51st in 31:16, and Henry Varela (Jr., Pecos, TX/Pecos H.S.), who took 54th in 31:52.

Other finishers for the men’s team were Gary Serna (Fr., Sundown, TX/ Sundown H.S.) in 32:01 (56th); John Lomasney (Jr., Gallup, NM/Gallup H.S.) in 33:19 (62nd); and Tyrone Sunde (Jr., Hugo, MN/White Bear Lake H.S.) in 36:34 (70th).

Michele Rice (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) led the women’s team. She finished the 6K race in 59th place with a time of 29:39. Mindy Clark (So, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) placed 61st in 29:41.

Other women’s finishers for ENMU were Kristi Jenkins (Grad., Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic H.S.) in 33:51 (76th); Jennifer Voris (So., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) in 34:55 (77th); Amber Van Baalan (So., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) in 35:02 (78th); and Jacqueline Atkins (Fr., Espanola, NM/Pojoaque H.S.) in 36:18 (79th).

Dora Davila of Angelo State won the individual women’s title in 23:33. Musa Gwanzura of Abilene Christian won the individual men’s title in 25:28.
