Eastern began the week by sweeping past Wayland Baptist, 3-0. Game scores were 15-13, 15-8, 15-12. Wayland Baptist fell to 12-8 on the season. Junior right side hitter Heather DeMarais (Jr., Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College) led Eastern with a .500 hitting percentage. She provided 15 kills and just 2 errors on 26 attacks. Junior outside hitter Irma Cobos (Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) added a team-high 16 kills and 15 digs. Senior outside hitter Charlene Hunt (Sacramento, CA/Sacramento City College) connected for 13 kills and 11 digs against Wayland Baptist. Junior middle blocker Maricela Santos (Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) had 10 kills, earned a .364 hitting percentage, and recorded 2 block solos. Setter Lindsey Davison (Jr., Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College) had 51 assists. Against Tarleton State, the Zias took an early lead by winning the opening game, 15-1. The Zias also claimed the second game, 15-12. Tarleton built an 11-2 lead in the third game, before ENMU rallied and took a 13-11 advantage. The Zias could not close out the match, as Tarleton regained the lead, and won 15-13. Eastern never trailed in the fourth game, and won 15-12 to take the match 3-1. Tarleton fell to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the LSC with the defeat. Four Zias finished the match with double-digit kill totals. DeMarais had 16 kills, Santos and Rachael Grant (Jr., MB, Wenatchee, WA/Columbia Basin College) each totaled 15 kills, and Cobos added 13 kills. Santos was particularly strong, recording just 2 kill errors and achieving a .481 hitting percentage. Davison also had a solid game. She provided 56 assists, earned 4 kills and no kill errors, provided 11 digs and had 2 service aces. Hunt supplied 26 digs and 3 service aces, while Cobos and Grant each contributed 19 digs. The Zias kept their winning streak intact by rallying to a five-game victory against Midwestern State. Midwestern won the first two games, 15-3 and 15-5, to take a commanding lead. ENMU responded by producing two routs of its own, taking the third game 15-0 and the fourth game 15-4. ENMU won the rally-scored fifth game, 15-11. The Lady Indians, who lost three LSC matches during the week, fell to 5-11 overall, 1-4 in the LSC. Against Midwestern State, the Zias received 14 kills from Grant, who also added 8 digs and 3 block assists. Cobos pounded out 10 kills and a match-high 17 digs. Hunt had 11 digs and 3 block assists, and DeMarais added 10 kills. ENMU’s attack percentage was .222. ENMU
AND WEST TEXAS SET FOR LSC BATTLE The Zias will play non-conference matches this weekend at the Texas Woman’s University Tournament in Denton, Texas. Matches will be played on Fri., Oct. 9 and Sat., Oct. 10. ENMU returns to Portales for a rescheduled match against New Mexico Highlands on Tues., Oct. 13 (7:00 p.m. MST). The match begins a 5-game homestand for the Zias. |
