VOLLEYBALL (8-5, 1-0 LSC)
ENMU’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to 7 matches and improved to 8-5 overall with a pair of victories last week. The Zias defeated Lone Star Conference South Division rival Texas A&M-Kingsville, 15-9, 6-15, 15-12, 16-14, to open LSC play with a win on Sept. 18. ENMU swept Texas Wesleyan, 15-12, 15-12, 15-10, in a non-conference match on Sept. 19.

In the match against Kingsville, the Zias fell behind 2-6 in game #1 before rallying for a 15-9 victory. In the second game, the Zias trailed 1-7 and were unable to recover, losing 6-15.

Eastern New Mexico quickly took charge of the third game, building a 7-2 advantage. Kingsville answered with five points to tie the game, 7-7. The game was tied 10-10 and 12-12, before the Zias won, 15-12.

The fourth game had a bizarre finish due to a scorekeeping error. With the score 12-8 in favor of the Zias, a TAMUK player was called for serving out of rotation. ENMU went on to an apparent 15-8 win. Officials later decided the rotation had been correct, so the teams had to resume play with a 12-8 score. Eastern prevailed, 16-14.

ENMU featured a balanced attack against the Lady Javelinas. Hitters Irma Cobos (Jr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) and Heather DesMarais (Jr., RS, Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College) both contributed 17 kills.

Charlene Hunt (Sr., OH, Sacramento, CA/Sacramento City College) added 11 kills and 22 digs, while Rachael Grant (Jr. Wenatchee, WA/Columbia Basin) provided 10 kills. Maricela Santos (Jr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) added 6 kills and 11 total blocks. Lindsey Davison (Sr., S, Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) produced 58 assists. Ada Ihemelu led the Lady Javelinas with 20 kills, and hit .326.

Against Texas Wesleyan, the Zias were led by Grant and DesMarais, each with 8 kills. Grant earned a .438 hitting percentage, and added 5 digs and 2 block assists. DesMarais recorded 3 digs and 3 block assists.

Cobos supplied the Zias with 5 kills and 14 digs, while Davison provided 27 assists. ENMU achieved a .201 team attack percentage, and limited Texas Wesleyan to a .000 hitting percentage (29 kills, 29 errors, 120 attacks).

For the year, Grant leads ENMU with 136 kills (3.0 per game), while DesMarais has 128 kills (2.8). Davison is averaging 11.2 assists, and Cobos is contributing 3.8 digs per contest.
