VOLLEYBALL
The ENMU volleyball team hosted the Torneo De Amigas at Greyhound Arena, Sept. 4-5, and the Zias earned the best record in the event, going 4-1 to improve to 4-5 on the season. No official champion was determined, but the Zias achieved a better record than Western New Mexico (3-1), Adams State (2-2), New Mexico Highlands (0-2) and College of the Southwest (0-3).

Eastern opened the tournament with a 15-13, 15-4, 15-6 win over Adams State. Irma Cobos (Jr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit) led the way with 9 kills and 8 digs, while Heather DesMarais (Jr., RS, Yakima, WA/ Columbia Basin College), Rachael Grant (Jr., MB, Wenatchee, WA/ Columbia Basin College) and Maricela Santos (Jr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) each added 8 kills.

In their second match, the Zias fell to Western New Mexico in four games, as the Mustangs won 15-12, 17-15, 4-15, 15-13. The highly-contested match lasted 2 hours, 20 minutes. Top performers for ENMU were Cobos with 19 kills, and 23 digs, DesMarais with 17 kills and Grant with 17 kills. Junior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College) provided 65 assists (16.3 per game).

ENMU rebounded from the loss to WNMU by claiming three wins on Saturday (Sept. 5). The Zias downed Adams State for the second time, 15-13, 15-6, 15-4 to start the day, then defeated New Mexico Highlands in consecutive games, 15-3, 15-10, 15-3. Eastern concluded the tournament with a 15-6, 15-7, 15-11 victory over the College of the Southwest.

Grant was named Co-MVP of the tournament along with junior setter Heather Komernicky of Western New Mexico. Grant averaged 3.2 kills per game (48 in 15 games) and had a .315 hitting percentage. She also ended the tournament with 28 digs, 3 service aces, 7 block solos and 7 block assists.

Joining Grant on the All-Tournament team was Davison, who earned 203 assists in 16 games, an average of 12.7 assists per game. She also contributed 55 digs, 3 service aces, 2 block solos and 4 block assists..

DAVISON CHOSEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior setter Lindsey Davison (5’8”, Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Setter of the week for the week ending Sun., Sept. 6. Davison helped the Zias earn a 4-1 record in the Torneo De Amigas, hosted by ENMU Sept. 4-5.

Davison averaged 12.7 assists per game during the tournament. She also produced 55 digs (3.4 per game), while adding 3 service aces and 4 total blocks.

For the season, Davison is averaging 10.9 assists per game (360 in 33 games). She also is averaging 2.9 digs per game (95 in 33 games).

UP NEXT FOR THE ZIAS
Eastern New Mexico, 4-5, travels to Las Vegas, N.M. on Tues., Sept. 8 for the team’s second match of the year against New Mexico Highlands. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. (Mountain Time). The Zias also have a pair of rematches with Western New Mexico. Both matches will be played in Silver City, N.M. — on Fri., Sept. 11 at 7:00 p.m. (Mountain) and on Sat., Sept. 12 at 10:00 a.m. (Mountain).
