GREYHOUNDS RALLY PAST MUSTANGS, 10-5
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University scored 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to overcome a 5-2 deficit on its way to a 10-5 triumph over visiting College of the Southwest, at Greyhound Field, Apr. 20. ENMU improved to 20-29 with the win.

College of the Southwest, which upset Texas Tech University, 7-4, last night (Apr. 19), fell to 15-28 overall.

The Greyhounds led 2-0 after two innings. Senior center fielder Sam George (Eau Claire, WI/ N.M. Military Institute) singled and later scored in the first. Senior right fielder Ryan Collins (Hesperia, CA/Victor Valley College) tripled with two outs in the third inning, then scored when junior designated hitter Matt Masiarek (Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.) immediately followed with a double to right center.

CSW answered with 5 runs in the top of the fourth stanza. The big hit of the inning was a 2-run home run to left field by center fielder Alfred Perry. ENMU pulled to within 5-3 with a single run in the bottom of the inning.

ENMU sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning to regain the lead. Jeff Thibodeaux (Jr., 1B, Apple Valley, CA/Victor Valley College) drove in the first run with a triple to right field. Junior second baseman Todd Carter (Chico, CA/Lassen J.C.) and senior third baseman Slubby Bennalley (Kirtland, NM/College of Southern Idaho) each hit an RBI-single during the inning, and two other runs scored on bases-loaded walks.

Junior pitcher Greg Stimack (Lakewood, CO/J.K. Mullen H.S.), who pitched two scoreless innings of middle relief, earned the victory. He upped his win-loss record to 8-5, tying the ENMU record for victories in a season.

Top hitters for ENMU were Thibodeaux, who went 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 1 RBI, Carter, who finished 3 for 5 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs, and Masiarek, who went 2 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBIs.

For CSW, shortstop Jerry Corliss was 2 for 5. Perry was 1 for 2 with a run scored and 2 RBIs. The Greyhounds swept the season series from the Mustangs, winning all three games.

Eastern New Mexico will host West Texas A&M in Lone Star Conference action this weekend. The Greyhounds and the Buffaloes will play a double-header on Fri., Apr. 23 at 4:00 p.m. (MST), and will play two more games on Sat., Apr. 24 at 12:00 p.m. (MST).

ENMU concludes the 1999 season at Texas Tech University on Tues., Apr. 27 at 7:00 p.m. (CST).
