GREYHOUNDS SWEEP BUFFALOES IN LSC DOUBLE-HEADER
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico scored 2 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat visiting West Texas A&M, 11-10, in the first game of a Lone Star Conference double-header, Apr. 23 at Greyhound Field. The Greyhounds downed the Buffaloes, 5-3, in the second game.

ENMU improved to 22-29 overall and 6-10 in the LSC South. WTAMU, which fell out of contention for an LSC Tournament berth, dropped to 33-17 overall, 8-8 in the LSC South.

The Greyhounds led 7-1 in the opener before West Texas A&M scored 5 runs in the sixth inning and 4 runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-9 lead. ENMU’s first two batters recorded outs in the bottom of the seventh, but junior right fielder Ryan Collins (Hesperia, CA/Victor Valley College) tied the game with a solo home run to center field. It was his 8th home run of the season.

Corey Heredia (Jr., 3B/2B, Las Cruces, NM/Lamar C.C.) followed Collins with a single, then scored the winning run on a double down the left field line by sophomore left fielder Chris Stewart (Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.). Heredia was 3 for 4 and scored 3 runs during the game. ENMU hit 4 solo home runs in the opener.

Senior center fielder Sam George (Eau Claire, WI/ N.M. Military Institute) homered with one out in the first inning for a 1-0 ENMU lead. Senior shortstop Loren Wood (Everett, WA/Skajit Valley C.C.) also homered in the first inning.

Heredia hit a home run to right field to lead off the third inning, and Collins provided the final homer in the seventh inning. The 4 homers were one short of the ENMU record set at N.M. Highlands earlier this year.

In the second game, sophomore pitcher Tim King (RHP, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) started for the Greyhounds, and threw 6 complete innings. He recorded 4 strikeouts and allowed 3 walks. He gave up 3 runs, but only one run was earned. King (1-6), won for the first time this season despite several quality appearances in recent weeks.

WTAMU starter Justin Noble fell to 6-4. Eastern scored 4 runs in the second inning for a 4-1 lead in the second game. Stewart drove in two runs with a single to center field.

The Greyhounds totaled 4 hits during the inning. Wood led ENMU in the second game with 2 hits and 1 run in 3 at bats. He finished the double-header 5 for 7 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs. Stewart was 1 for 3 (2 RBIs) in the nightcap.

For WTAMU in the second game, Alex Nava was 2 for 2 and Steve Luda was 2 for 4. In the first game, Nava was 2 for 4 (3 runs, 1 RBI) and Tim Lybarger was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs.

ENMU and West Texas A&M will play another double-header on Sat., Apr. 24. Game time for the first game is set for 12:00 p.m. (MST).
