TWU was led by shortstop Nickie Engelbrecht, who went 3 for 3 with a run scored and 1 RBI. Outfielder Cathy Jacobson earned 2 hits in 4 at bats, while scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. Engelbrecht and Jacobson each hit a double for TWU. TWU pitcher Blaire Beaty was very effective, limiting the Zias to just 3 hits and striking out 3 batters, while allowing only 1 walk. Beaty improved to 25-7 on the season. Two of ENMU’s hits came in the fifth inning. Sophomore pitcher Suzy Seitzinger (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) started the inning with a single, and later stole second base. Senior right fielder Brandi Thomas (Clovis, NM/Eastern Arizona College) advanced Seitzinger to third with a one-out single, but Beaty escaped the inning without allowing a run. In the second game, TWU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Pioneers pushed across 2 more runs. First baseman Sheila Sterling drove in both runs with a single to right field. The Pioneers added another run in the fifth stanza for a 4-0 lead. ENMU scored its only run in the top of the sixth. Junior second baseman Enida Rosales (Glendale, AZ/South Mountain C.C.) singled with one out, then moved to third on a double by Seitzinger. Rosales scored when sophomore catcher Erica Sussex (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) grounded out to second base. TWU pitcher Karen Lundstedt improved to 22-7, after holding the Zias to four hits. Seitzinger’s double was the only extra-base hit of the game. The series with Texas Woman’s completed Eastern’s third season of intercollegiate softball. The Zias were led by first-year Head Coach Kathleen Rodriguez. |
