ZIAS DOWN MISSOURI WESTERN, 5-0
EDMOND, OK — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team opened the Broncho Invitational at the University of Central Oklahoma with a 5-0 victory over Missouri Western. The win came in the preliminary round, which includes two more matches on Thurs, Apr. 15.

The Zias are scheduled to play Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State (Okla.) in other preliminary round matches before entering elimination play on Sat., Apr. 17.

The Zias built a quick 3-0 lead versus Missouri Western by winning every double flight. ENMU’s #1 doubles team of freshman Layla Turner (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and junior Julie Stiles (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) edged Tracy Jones and Kara Thacker, 8-6.

At #2 doubles, senior Rozlyn Gorski (El Paso, TX/Coronado H.S.) and freshman Makenzie McCravey (Eldorado, TX/ Eldorado H.S.) defeated Jaime O’Brien and Shannon Kropuenske, 8-4.

The #3 doubles team of freshman Sarah Pennington (Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) and senior Dena Boans (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad H.S.) easily defeated Nikki Glasgo and Anne Sager of Missouri Western, 8-2.

The Zias clinched the win with victories by Stiles and Pennington in singles competition. Stiles won #2 singles over Thacker, 6-1, 6-0. Pennington earned a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Kropuenske at #5 singles.

Eastern New Mexico is now 17-4 on the season. The Zias are likely to qualify for an NCAA Regional Tournament berth for the third consecutive year. Regional pairings will be announced April 28.
