TEXAS WOMAN’S WINS TWO GAMES FROM ZIAS
DENTON, TX — The Pioneers of Texas Woman’s University built a 5-0 lead on their way to an 8-2 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in the first game of a double-header at Pioneer Field, Apr. 23. TWU edged ENMU, 3-2, in the second game to sweep the Lone Star Conference twinbill and improve to 45-15 overall, 9-5 in the LSC South. ENMU dropped to 14-25 overall (5-9 LSC South) and was eliminated from contention for an LSC Tournament berth.

TWU scored three runs in the first inning of the opener, then added single runs in the second and third innings for a 5-0 lead. ENMU cut its deficit to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but the Pioneers pulled away by scoring one run each in the fourth through sixth innings.

Third baseman Leslie Roddy led Texas Woman’s with 3 hits in 4 at bats. She scored 1 run and recorded 2 RBIs. Second baseman Stephanie Lay was 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs, and first baseman Sheila Sterling was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

ENMU’s top hitter was freshman first baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.), who connected for 2 hits in 4 at bats. She also scored a run. Eastern’s other run was scored by sophomore catcher Erica Sussex (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.). Sussex was 1 for 2 with a walk.

In the second game, TWU took another early lead by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Mickie Engelbrecht drove in both runs with a single to center field. TWU increased its lead to 3-0 when Roddy walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

The Zias rallied to within a single run. Sussex scored ENMU’s first run after hitting a single in the fourth inning. Sussex also scored in the sixth inning, crossing the plate on an infield error.

Neither team scored the rest of the way, as the Pioneers secured the double-header sweep. TWU’s top hitter in the game was Engelbrecht, who earned 3 hits in 3 at bats.

ENMU was led by Sussex, who went 3 for 3, and by sophomore shortstop Sarah Rempp, who recorded 2 hits in 3 at bats. ENMU and TWU are scheduled to play another double-header on Sat., Apr. 24, starting at 12:00 p.m. (MST). The double-header will conclude ENMU’s season schedule.
