NORTHERN COLORADO DOWNS ENMU, 78-58
GREELEY, CO — The University of Northern Colorado limited Eastern New Mexico University to 36.1% field goal shooting, and the Beard defeated the Zias, 78-58, Sat., Dec. 11 at Butler-Hancock Hall in Greeley, Colo.

Northern Colorado improved to 4-2 with the win. Eastern New Mexico fell to 5-3 with its third consecutive loss since opening the season 5-0. All three losses have come on the road.

The Zias converted just 22 of 61 shots from the floor, while UNC made 24 of 52 field goals (46.2%). Nonetheless, the Bears’ large lead was earned primarily at the line, where UNC sank 26 of 36 charity shots. ENMU was 10 of 16 at the free throw line. ENMU was whistled for 27 personal fouls, compared to 15 on UNC.

Senior post Jenny Conaway (Midland, TX/South Plains College), led the Zias with 12 points, but fouled out. Jill Fadenrecht fouled out for UNC. Joining Conaway in double figures for ENMU was junior post Katheryne Hickman (San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) with 10 points. Hickman also recorded 8 rebounds. Bobbie Wallin (Jr., Post, Moriarty, NM/Moriarty H.S.) also grabbed 8 boards for the Zias, while Jody Avent (Jr., G, Stinnett, TX/South Plains College) supplied 4 steals and 2 assists.

Amanda Hewitt (Sr., Post, San Antonio, TX/Madison H.S.) scored 6 points, had 5 rebounds, and provided 2 steals and 1 assist with no turnovers. Although Hewitt did not commit a turnover, the Zias had 27 turnovers overall.

Despite the 20-point loss, ENMU held a 38-37 rebounding margin. Northern Colorado made 22 turnovers. The Bears recorded 17 steals, led by 6 from Fadenrecht, who also scored 8 points, blocked 2 shots and supplied 3 assists.

The top scorer for UNC was Diane Dittburner, with 15 points. Melissa Borell contributed 14 points and Jessica Logan added 10 points.

The Zias went 1-3 on their four-game road trip that included games at Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas, Dec. 2 and 4, plus games at Oklahoma Panhandle State and Northern Colorado, Dec. 9 and 11. The Zias’ lone victory on the road swing was a 75-55 win at Harding.

ENMU does not play again until Dec. 30, when the host Wayland Baptist University at Greyhound Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (MST). The game will feature the ‘99 Close-Out Sale, in which all admissions and concessions will be just 99 cents.
