ANGELO STATE DEFEATS ZIAS, 77-62
Rambelles Sink 30 of 33 Free Throws and 5 of 9 Three-Pointers

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University converted 30 of 33 free throws and sank 5 of 9 three-point attempts to defeat visiting Eastern New Mexico University in a Lone Star Conference South Division game, Feb. 11 at the ASU Physical Education Building.

ASU, which rallied from a 34-31 halftime deficit, improved to 8-15 on the season, 4-9 in the LSC South. ENMU dropped to 13-9 overall and 6-6 in the LSC South. The Zias have lost six consecutive LSC games.

The Rambelles, who converted only 8 of 22 field goal attempts (36.4%) in the first half, made 13 of 22 field goals (59.1%) over the final 20 minutes. ASU opened the second half with an 18-6 run for a 49-40 lead.

Eastern cut the deficit to four points, 53-49, on a turnaround jumper by junior post Amanda Mendez (5’11”, San Antonio, TX/Madison H.S.) with 8:53 remaining. Angelo State regained control with an 11-3 run that increased the lead to 64-52 with 4:14 left. Brooke Bowman scored the first six points of the offensive surge, providing a two-point basket and a foul shot, then sinking a 3-pointer.

ASU was 4 of 4 on three-pointers in the second half. Katrina Polnick of Angelo State led all players in scoring with 20 points. She also hauled down 7 rebounds for the Rambelles. Bowman added 16 points, 4 boards and 3 assists.

Eastern was led by Mendez, who scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore post/forward Katheryne Hickman (6’0”, San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills 1st Baptist) scored 13 points for the Zias, before fouling out with just under a minute remaining. The Zias conclude a two-game LSC road trip at Abilene Christian University on Sat., Feb. 13. Tipoff in Abilene, Texas is set for 5:00 p.m. (MST).
