ENMU CLINCHES LSC TOURNAMENT BERTH
Zias Defeat Texas Woman’s University, 71-49

PORTALES, NM — Junior post player Jenny Conaway (Midland, TX/South Plains College) scored 15 points and junior guard/forward Sharon Max (Kirtland, NM/Central H.S.) added 13 points, as the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team clinched a Lone Star Conference Tournament berth with a 71-49 victory over visiting Texas Woman’s University, Feb. 19 at Greyhound Arena. The Zias improved to 15-10 overall and 8-7 in the LSC South Division with the win. TWU dropped to 7-18 overall, 4-11 in the LSC South.

The Zias, who recorded their 15th win for the third consecutive season, held a 34-24 halftime lead, then gradually pulled way from the Pioneers in the second half. Max scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half, and Conaway scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half. Conaway also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Two other Zias reached double figures. They were sophomore post/forward Katheryne Hickman (San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills First Baptist H.S.) with 11 points and sophomore post Bobbie Wallin (Moriarty, NM/Moriarty H.S.) with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior point guard Julie Smith (Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) provided 6 assists and 2 steals.

Texas Woman’s University was led by junior guard Angi Traplena, who scored 11 points and recorded 6 rebounds. Senior forward/post Laura Kolenovsky (Seguin, TX/UT-Arlington) added 7 points and 5 assists.

Eastern limited TWU to 25.4% field goal shooting for the game. Meanwhile, the Zias hit 42.2% of their shots (27 of 64) and canned 76.% at the free throw line (19 of 25).

ENMU finishes its regular season schedule tomorrow (Sat., Feb. 20), when the Zias host Tarleton State. Tipoff at Greyhound Arena is set for 5:30 p.m. (MST).

Eastern begins the LSC Tournament at the home court of the North Division winner on Tues., Feb. 23. East Central (Okla.) and Southeastern Oklahoma are tied for the LSC North lead at 9-4 heading into their final regular season games on Saturday.
