STUDENT-ATHLETES FROM SUDAN SUCCEED IN EASTERN NEW MEXICO CLASSROOMS
PORTALES, NM — Two Eastern New Mexico University student-athletes from Sudan, Texas experienced tremendous academic success in the classroom this past fall. Sophomore women’s basketball guard Breanne Baker and transfer football player Jared Fisher both excelled academically during the recently completed semester.

Baker, a post player on the basketball team, earned a 3.77 semester grade point average. She has been on the Athletic Honor Roll all three semesters at ENMU. Baker, who helped Sudan High School win two Class A State championships in basketball, has seen action in all 15 games this season, as the Zias have earned a 12-3 overall record and a 6-0 mark in the Lone Star Conference South Division.

Fisher, who transferred to Eastern from Texas Tech University, achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA this fall in his first semester at ENMU. Fisher, who will be eligible to compete next fall after sitting out the NCAA’s one-year transfer residency requirement, joins a successful ENMU team that went 8-3 in 1998 under the guidance of Head Coach Harold “Bud” Elliott. The Greyhounds were 6-3 in the LSC South Division, including a 10-7 win over traditional power Angelo State University. Eastern New Mexico, founded in 1934, enrolls 3,510 full-time students.

The University has been designated by the State of New Mexico as the Center for Teaching Excellence and also coordinates Re: Learning for New Mexico throughout the public school system. ENMU’s athletic teams compete in NCAA Division II.
