ERIC BOLL NAMED FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD COACH
PORTALES, NM — Eric Boll, most recently the defensive secondary coach at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebr., has been named defensive secondary coach at Eastern New Mexico University, Head Coach Harold “Bud” Elliott announced today.

Boll will begin his duties this week to help prepare for the arrival of players on Aug. 11. Team practices start on Aug. 13.

Boll (pronounced Bowl) has significant coaching experience at the college level. In addition to coaching at Wayne State, he has also coached at Westmar College (Iowa), the University of South Dakota, North Dakota State College of Science, and Sul Ross State University (Texas).

He was a student assistant at Westmar (NCAA Division III), where he coached inside and outside linebackers and assisted with the offensive line from 1981-85. His linebackers broke five defensive records. Boll also was the junior varsity defensive coordinator.

While working on his master’s degree at South Dakota (NCAA Division II), he was a graduate assistant coach, focusing on outside linebackers, but also assisting with the defensive secondary. He was also South Dakota’s special teams coordinator. He was at South Dakota from 1988 through 1990.

Later in 1990, he became defensive coordinator and head wrestling coach at North Dakota State College of Science (NJCAA). NDSCS was 22-15 during his four years (1990-91 through 1993-94), and won the 1992 Royal Crown Cola Bowl. He coached 11 All-Region XII players.

He was defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and head track coach at Sul Ross State from 1994-97. He coached the defensive line and linebackers, and recruited in Texas, New Mexico and the Midwestern states. He also handled Sul Ross’ junior college recruiting. Sul Ross was 6-4 in 1996, winning the American Southwest Conference title. It was the Lobos’ first winning season since 1983.

“He has considerable experience, and he has a lot of experience coaching press coverage,” Elliott said. “I think we really ended up getting a good man for the job.”

Boll received a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education/World and American History with Coaching Endorsement from Westmar in 1985. He earned a master’s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from South Dakota in 1990. He completed Teaching Certification Coursework in Social Sciences at the University of Kansas in 1986.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Boll also has coached at the high school level. He was an assistant football coach, head freshman football coach and head wrestling coach at Maur Hill Prep High School in Atchison, Kan. from 1985-88. He helped coach a varsity football team to the Kansas State Playoffs, led an undefeated freshman football team and coached seven wrestlers to the Kansas State Tournament.

At ENMU, Boll will serve the Greyhounds in several capacities. He will be the team’s primary coach of defensive backs, and will assist in developing defensive strategies. He will help with the strength program and the off-season workout program. He will have a geographic area of recruiting responsibility.

Boll will also be an instructor in ENMU’s Department of Health and Physical Education. He has been an instructor at Wayne State as well, teaching in the Department of Human Performance and Leisure Studies. Boll also was an instructor in the Department of Health and Physical Education at North Dakota Science, and taught in the Kinesiology Department at Sul Ross State.

Boll replaces Nick Mitchell, who also coached defensive backs. Mitchell has returned to his native California for personal reasons.
