TYRONE JONES NAMED FOOTBALL GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH
PORTALES, NM — Tyrone Jones, an intern assistant football coach at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C. during the 1998 season, has been named to a graduate assistantship as defensive line coach at Eastern New Mexico University, Head Coach Harold “Bud” Elliott announced today.

Jones will begin his duties at ENMU on Aug. 2. Jones played at Chowan College from 1993 through 1996. He was named Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman in 1993, 1995, and 1996, and was a team captain his last two seasons.

Jones also earned academic recognition on the President’s List in 1996 and on the Dean’s List in 1994 and 1995. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, with an emphasis in Sport Science, from Chowan in 1998.

He was an intern during the 1998 season, coaching punters and placekickers, and also serving as assistant defensive line coach. Jones has worked with weight training, and will help the Greyhounds with their strength and conditioning program. He will also be involved in recruiting, and will help with Eastern’s off-season program.

In addition to his football responsibilities, he will teach activity courses in the Department of Health and Physical Education at ENMU. “Tyrone’s had a year of coaching experience in addition to four years as a defensive lineman,” Elliott said. “He’s young and energetic. He was recommended to me by their (Chowan’s) defensive coordinator (Charlie Giangrosso), who coached for me at Northwest Missouri State.”
