PORTALES, NM — Warren Wood, formerly interim head men’s basketball coach at Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Mich., has been named assistant men’s basketball coach at Eastern New Mexico University, Athletic Director Rosie Stallman has announced.

Wood will assist ENMU head coach Terry Tyler, who begins his second season this fall. Wood, a 1994 graduate of Saginaw Valley State with a B.B.A. in Management, was interim head coach at Saginaw Valley during the 1997-98 season. He was 14-13 overall and 10-8 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as interim head coach. He previously was an assistant men’s basketball assistant coach at SVSU during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons, and from April through October of 1997.

He has six years of coaching experience at the high school level. He was head boys’ basketball coach this past season at Hemlock High School in Hemlock, Mich. In addition to his year at Hemlock, Wood spent four seasons as an assistant varsity boys’ coach at Valley Lutheran High School in Saginaw (1989-91, 1989-91), where he compiled a 28-12 record with the junior varsity program.

Wood also was head junior varsity boys’ coach and assistant varsity boys’ coach at John Glenn High School in Bay City, Mich. in 1986-87. At ENMU, Wood will be Tyler’s top assistant, helping with all aspects of the program.

He will be an important part of ENMU’s courtside leadership, and will also play an active role in recruiting. Wood is currently assisting with the Terry Tyler Team Basketball Camps. He will return to ENMU on a permanent basis in August.

Wood and his wife, Shirley, are the parents of two children, Ryan (age 14) and Ashley (age 9).

The Greyhounds were 9-17 overall, 2-12 in the Lone Star Conference South Division this past season, as Tyler completed his first year at ENMU. Senior forward Deron Rippey was named Second Team All-LSC after averaging 20.9 points per game, including 26.2 points per game in LSC play.
