SPLITS DOUBLE-HEADER Eastern gained a split of the double-header after losing the first game, 10-4. ENMU is now 13-19 on the season. New Mexico Highlands is 6-19 overall. The Greyhounds, led by senior shortstop Loren Wood (Everett, WA/Skajit Valley C.C.), tied a school record with 27 hits in the second game. Wood, who hit a homer in the first game, belted two homers in the second game. He leads the team with 10 home runs, including five in ENMU’s last three games. Wood began the day with a .382 batting average. He went 2-for-2 in the opener and had four hits in six at bats in the second game. He scored six runs and earned five RBIs in the two games. In the opener, NMHU rallied from a 4-2 deficit. The Cowboys scored three runs in the third inning for a 5-4 lead, then pulled away with five runs in the fourth. Jeremy Nicholas was 3-for-3 at the plate. Rusty Clear went 2-for-4, including a home run. He also hit a homer in the second game. Joe Clabaugh (Jr., C, Mustang, OK/Western Oklahoma) provided ENMU with two hits — both doubles — in the first game, but the Greyhounds were outhit by NMHU, 14-7. Russ Jones threw a complete game for Highlands, and improved to 1-1 on the season. Starting pitcher Billy Fitzgerald (Sr., Yuma, AZ/Cibola H.S.) took the loss for ENMU. The Cowboys took an early lead in the second game by scoring six runs in the first inning. ENMU quickly overcame the deficit with eight runs in the second inning, then increased its lead with seven runs in the third stanza. NMHU plated five runs in the bottom of the third, but still trailed 15-11. The Greyhounds put the game out of reach by scoring nine times in the fourth inning for a 24-11 lead. Wood’s two homers led the way for ENMU. Second baseman Corey Heredia (Jr., Las Cruces, NM/ Lamar C.C.) also went 4-for-6, with a homer and a double. Third baseman Todd Carter (Jr., Chico, CA/Lassen J.C.) was 4-for-6 with a double. Center fielder Sam George (Sr., Eau Claire, WI/ N.M. Mil. Inst.) and designated hitter Matt Masiarek (Jr., Brisbane, Australia/Lamar C.C.) also homered for ENMU, while left fielder Chris Stewart (So., Albuquerque, NM/Manzano H.S.) went 5-for-5 with a double, four runs scored and three RBIs. The Greyhounds travel to Plainview, Texas tomorrow (Wed., Mar. 24) for a single 9-inning game against Wayland Baptist University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (MST). |
