ZIAS SPLIT DOUBLE-HEADER WITH ACU
Rachel Mohler Hits 2-RBI Homer for ENMU

PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico freshman first baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending the Zias to a 3-2 victory over Abilene Christian University in the second game of a double-header at Zia Softball Field, Mar. 26.

ACU’s Misty Berry pitched a complete-game shutout in the first game, as the Wildcats claimed a 4-0 victory. The double-header opened Lone Star Conference South Division play for both teams. Eastern New Mexico is now 9-14 overall and 1-1 in the LSC South. Abilene Christian is 14-8 overall and 1-1 in the LSC South.

Mohler’s home run allowed ENMU to overcome a 2-1 deficit. There were two outs in the 5th inning when junior second baseman Enida Rosales (Glendale, AZ/South Mountain College) reached on an error by the shortstop. Mohler followed with her 5th home run of the season. She placed the ball over the left field fence just inside the foul pole.

The Zias trailed 1-0 early in the second game. ACU scored a run in the second inning, and the Zias equalized in the fourth inning. Sophomore center fielder Kim Paschall (Midland, TX/ Midland H.S.) hit a bunt single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Mohler.

ENMU relief pitcher Tracy Hooker (Fr., Fort Worth, TX/Lawrence Bell H.S.) allowed no runs and just one hit over the final three innings to secure the win. She evened her record at 4-4.

Paschall finished the second game with 3 hits in 4 at bats for ENMU. Mohler went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. She was 1 for 3 in the first game.

In the opener, Berry pitched effectively for Abilene Christian. She allowed 4 hits, recorded 3 strikeouts and did not give up a walk. She held ENMU without a hit until designated hitter Erica Sussex (So., Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) smacked a double to lead off the fifth inning.

ACU scored 2 runs in the third inning on a double by Theressa Johnson. Jennifer Campell homered in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 3-0, and the Wildcats added another run in the seventh.

Eastern New Mexico and Abilene Christian are scheduled to play another double-header at Zia Softball Field on Saturday (Mar. 27). The first game is set to get underway at 11:00 a.m. (MST).
