EASTERN NEW MEXICO DEFEATS MIDWESTERN FOR BERTH IN REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
EDMOND, OK — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship match with a 5-2 semifinal victory over Midwestern State University, Mar. 7 at the Edmond Racquet Club. The victory, ENMU’s third of the year over MSU, improved the Zias to 20-8 on the season.

Eastern, ranked #19 in NCAA Division II, will take Central Oklahoma, ranked #11, in the Regional Final on Saturday (May 8). UCO defeated Missouri Southern, 6-0, in the other semifinal match.

Against Midwestern State, the Zias built a 2-1 lead in the doubles flights. ENMU’s #1 doubles team of Layla Turner (Fr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and Julie Stiles (Jr., Roswell, NM/ Goddard H.S.) defeated Midwestern’s Marci Matthews and Nadine Plattek, 8-2.

The Zias also won #3 doubles, as Sarah Pennington (Fr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) and Dena Boans (Sr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) easily defeated Sara Butler and Vicky Huie, 8-1.

MSU was victorious at #2 doubles, with Brynne Chappell and Marsha Meyer defeating Rozlyn Gorski (Sr., El Paso, TX/ Coronado H.S.) and Makenzie McCravey (Fr., Eldorado, TX/Eldorado H.S.), 8-5.

Turner, Stiles and Pennington each won a singles flight to clinch the team victory for ENMU. Turner downed Matthews, 6-0, 6-1, at #1 singles and Stiles defeated Meyer, 6-1, 6-2, at #2 singles. Pennington claimed a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Butler at #5 singles. MSU earned its second point of the match when Chappell defeated Gorski, 6-2, 6-3, in the #3 singles match.

ENMU has reached the Regional Final twice in three years. If the Zias defeat UCO, they will earn their first ever trip to the National Finals (May 13-16 in Pensacola, Fla.).
