BENNALLEY, GEORGE, COLLINS SELECTED FOR LSC ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
PORTALES, NM — Three Eastern New Mexico University baseball players have been named to the 1999 Lone Star Conference Academic All-Conference South Division Team, as selected by the LSC’s sports information directors.

ENMU’s selections were senior catcher Slubby Bennalley (Kirtland, NM/Coll. of Southern Idaho), senior center fielder Sam George (Eau Claire, WI/ N.M. Mil. Institute) and senior right fielder Ryan Collins (Hesperia, CA/Victor Valley College).

Bennalley, a Sociology major with a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, hit .364 for the Greyhounds this spring. He hit 7 doubles, recorded 27 RBIs and scored 21 runs. He was solid behind the plate, throwing out 14 of 40 base stealers and achieving a .963 fielding percentage. He earned 171 putouts and 40 assists with just 8 errors.

George, who is majoring in Computer Information Systems and is seeking a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, has a 3.81 GPA. He was second on the team with a .397 batting average. He pounded out 14 doubles, 2 triples and 9 homers. He scored 48 runs (2nd on team) and drove in 41 runs (tied for 2nd). He was successful on 15 of 17 stolen base attempts. George tied an ENMU record by hitting 3 homers against College of the Southwest on Mar. 2.

Collins, a Geology major with a 3.80 GPA the past two semesters, led the Greyhounds with 42 RBIs. He earned a .261 batting average and provided many key hits for the ENMU offense, which averaged 6.8 runs per game. He played in 51 of 52 games, recording 13 doubles, 6 triples and 8 homers. He provided 5 sacrifice bunts and stole 7 bases on 9 attempts.

Student-athletes with at least a 3.2 grade point average and 24 or more semester hours at an LSC member institution were eligible for the LSC Academic All-Conference Team. A total of 10 players were selected by the LSC sports information directors. All nominees who were not selected were named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
