ENMU ATHLETICS DIRECTOR ROSIE STALLMAN TO SPEAK AT TITLE IX SEMINAR IN CHICAGO
PORTALES, NM — Rosie Stallman, Director of Athletics at Eastern New Mexico University will be a featured speaker tomorrow (Tues., May 11) at the 1999 NCAA Title IX Seminar in Chicago.

Stallman was invited by the NCAA to be a featured speaker at the seminar. The NCAA workshop, which is intended to assist member institutions in complying with Title IX regulations, continues at The Westin Hotel through May 12.

Stallman, who previously was Director of Athletics at Texas Wesleyan University for three years, will discuss “Promotions for Women’s Sports at the NCAA Division II Level.” During her 90-minute workshop session, she will use several examples of promotional projects for women’s athletics at Eastern New Mexico University during the 1998-99 academic year. Her speech will also feature a PowerPoint presentation with photos and information from promotional activities at ENMU.

“This is a great opportunity to increase Eastern New Mexico University’s visibility throughout intercollegiate athletics,” said Jennifer Poyer, ENMU Athletics Events Manager. “We have really worked hard to create successful promotions for our women’s teams. Rosie has been very progressive and open-minded.”

Stallman coordinated ENMU’s Truck Promotion, which raised $50,868 for the Athletic Department. Another promotion — Mikey Likes It — at ENMU’s volleyball match with arch-rival West Texas A&M encouraged nearly 1,000 fans to attend the game. It was one of the largest crowds in NCAA Division II volleyball in 1998.

Likewise, Midnight Madness was a success, with a large crowd attending the start of the men’s and women’s basketball season. A “Wayne’s World” promotion during women’s basketball season brought out students to see Head Coach Wayne Moore and the Zias take on a Lone Star Conference opponent.

Pre-game tailgate parties sponsored by ENMU’s Bench Club were held for every sport to increase student involvement in athletics. The tailgate party for women’s tennis was the first event of its kind in the history of ENMU Tennis. Other innovations for tennis included singing or playing the National Anthem at all home matches and developing a promotion for the break between doubles and singles matches.

In addition to leading public relations efforts, Stallman has been active in fundraising and facility improvements. She was instrumental in designing and coordinating ENMU’s new on-campus softball facility — Zia Softball Field — which opened in February. She also initiated a corporate sponsorship program that resulted in the donation of a softball scoreboard.

Promotions at the new softball field involved bat races between double-header games. There were also mascot races, which allowed children to interact with ENMU’s Greyhound mascot Ralph.

The Title IX Seminar will deal with many issues relating to Title IX, gender equity and women’s athletics. Other noteworthy speakers at the event include Ted Leland, Director of Athletics at Stanford University, Darlene Bailey, Associate Director of Athletics at Southwest Missouri State University, Chris Voelz, Director of Athletics at the University of Minnesota, Jean Lenti Ponsetto, Senior Associate Director of Athletics at DePaul University.

The seminar will also include speeches by Ellen Vargyas, Legal Counsel to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as legal counsels at NCAA member universities.
