PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team had an outstanding 1998-99 season, earning a 20-9 overall record and qualifying for an NCAA Regional Tournament for the third consecutive year.

The team has also been recognized for its academic accomplishments, as three players have been named to the Lone Star Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll pays tribute to student-athletes who have achieved grade point averages of 3.2 or higher and have earned at least 24 semester hours at LSC member colleges and universities.

Eastern’s three Honor Roll selections were junior Julie Stiles (#2 Singles, #1 Doubles, Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.), senior Rozlyn Gorski (#3 Singles, #2 Doubles, El Paso, TX/Coronado H.S.) and senior Dena Boans (#6 Singles, #3 Doubles, Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.).

Stiles, a Physical Education major, achieved a 3.727 GPA during the past two semesters. She was ranked 17th in the Midwest Region in singles and teamed with ENMU’s #1 player, Layla Turner (Fr., Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) to earn a #27 national ranking in NCAA Division II. Stiles finished the year with a 24-8 record in #2 singles competition and a 23-11 mark at #1 doubles.

Gorski, who is majoring in Anthropology, earned a 3.636 GPA over the past two semesters. She teamed with freshman Makenzie McCravey (Eldorado, TX/Eldorado H.S.) for a 19-10 record at #2 doubles. Gorski was 11-21 at #3 singles.

Boans, a Biology major, compiled a 3.700 GPA during the last two semesters. She combined with freshman Sarah Pennington (Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) to win the #3 Doubles flight at the LSC Singles and Doubles Championships in the fall. She concluded the year with a 25-10 overall doubles record and a 9-16 record at #6 singles.

LSC sports information directors voted from the Commissioner’s Honor Roll to determine the LSC Academic All-Conference Team. Six players were selected: Julie Mavity, Leah Ticer and Jenny Wallace of Abilene Christian, Michaela Perlikova and Jana Vnouckova of Central Oklahoma, and Audrea Webb of Cameron.
