FIRST BASEMAN RACHEL MOHLER NAMED LSC SOUTH CO-FRESHMAN-OF-THE-YEAR
First-year Power Hitter Earns All-LSC South Division First Team Honors; Kim Paschall, Sarah Rempp Named 2nd Team; Tracy Hooker is Honorable Mention
PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University first baseman Rachel Mohler (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley H.S.) had an outstanding freshman season this spring, hitting .395 and setting a school record with 9 home runs. As a result, she has been named Co-Freshman-of-the-Year in the Lone Star Conference South Division. Mohler also earned a spot on the All-LSC South Division First Team.

Joining Mohler as a Co-Freshman-of-the-Year was Maria Gutierrez of Texas A&M-Kingsville. Gutierrez was also named LSC Pitcher-of-the-Year.

In addition to Mohler, the Zias placed three other players on the All-LSC South squad. Sophomore center fielder Kim Paschall (Midland, TX/Midland H.S.) and sophomore shortstop Sarah Rempp (Greeley, CO/Central H.S.) were selected to the Second Team. Freshman pitcher Tracy Hooker (Fort Worth, TX/Lawrence D. Bell H.S.) received Honorable Mention recognition.

Mohler quickly became an offensive leader for the Zias. She started all 41 games, and provided a team-high 51 hits in 129 at bats. She led the Zias in runs scored (30), RBIs (30) and doubles (11). Her 9 homers broke the previous record of 7, set by Jennifer Doolittle in 1997. Mohler topped the Zias with a .721 slugging percentage. She recorded a team-high 248 putouts, while earning a .965 fielding percentage. Mohler was named LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week (Mar. 29), after earning 7 hits in 14 at bats during a 4-game series versus Abilene Christian University. She blasted 2 homers during the series, helping ENMU earn a 3-1 mark against the Wildcats.

Paschall claimed a .370 batting average by connecting for 50 hits in 135 at bats. She scored 24 runs, produced 11 RBIs, and tied Mohler for the team lead with 2 triples. She stole a team-high 10 bases (on 12 attempts), and was exceptional on defense. She recorded 67 putouts and recorded 8 assists from her center field position. Paschall was named First Team All-LSC South in 1998, after hitting .344 with 64 runs scored and 10 RBIs. She has pounded out 114 hits in her two-year college career, while earning a .355 batting average. She has scored a total of 75 runs, while achieving 21 RBIs.

Rempp hit .324 for the Zias this spring, while amassing 7 doubles and 3 triples. She recorded 23 RBIs, and has 49 RBIs in her two seasons at ENMU. She started 37 games in 1999, and was 7 of 9 on stolen bases, while scoring 16 runs for the Zias. Rempp is currently tied for 2nd on ENMU’s career doubles list with 12. She was named Honorable Mention All-LSC in 1998, when she hit .253 with 26 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Hooker led the ENMU pitching staff with a 3.62 earned run average, and finished the season with an 8-10 overall record. She held opponents to a .289 batting average, and recorded 40 strikeouts while allowing just 15 walks. She led the Zias with 89.0 innings pitched. She also provided consistent defense, earning a .971 fielding percentage on 6 putouts and 27 assists with only 1 error.

The Zias, under first-year Head Coach Kathleen Rodriguez, concluded the season with a 14-27 overall record, including 5-11 in the LSC South Division. The Zias battled for an LSC Tournament berth until the final 4-game series of the year. ENMU fielded a young team, with three freshmen and six sophomores. The Zias were in their third season of intercollegiate competition since the program was started in 1997.
