ENMU #1 SINGLES PLAYER LAYLA TURNER NAMED LSC FRESHMAN-OF-THE-YEAR
Sarah Pennington and Dena Boans Chosen 2nd Team All-LSC at #3 Doubles
PORTALES, NMLayla Turner (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.), the #1 singles player for Eastern New Mexico University throughout the 1998-99 season, has been named Lone Star Conference Freshman-of-the-Year in voting by the LSC head women’s tennis coaches.

Turner has a 28-5 singles record and is ranked 27th nationally in NCAA Division II. The LSC also announced the 1999 All-Lone Star Conference Women’s Tennis Team.

ENMU’s #3 doubles team of Sarah Pennington (Fr., Sweetwater, TX/Sweetwater H.S.) and Dena Boans (Sr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) were named Second Team All-Conference.

Honorable Mention All-LSC honors went to #2 singles player Julie Stiles (Jr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.), #4 singles player Makenzie McCravey (Fr., Eldorado, TX/Eldorado H.S.) and #5 singles player Pennington.

The Zias also received Honorable Mention All-LSC accolades for the #1 doubles team of Turner and Stiles and the #2 doubles team of Rozlyn Gorski (Sr., El Paso, TX/Coronado H.S.) and McCravey.

Despite being chosen Freshman-of-the-Year, Turner was overlooked in the All-Conference voting. She split a pair of matches with First Team selection Julie Mavity of Abilene Christian, won both matches against Honorable Mention selection Ana Vera Vera of Cameron, and split two matches with Honorable Mention pick Zdena Rebekova of Northeastern State (Okla.)

Turner and Stiles are 22-10 and ranked 24th nationally in doubles.

Pennington and Boans have a 24-9 doubles record, while Gorski and McCravey are 19-8 in doubles action. Stiles has a 23-8 record in singles play, McCravey is 18-10 on the season, and Pennington is 23-7 overall.

As a team, ENMU is ranked 19th in NCAA Division II. The Zias begin NCAA Regional Tournament action tomorrow (Fri., May 7) in Edmond, Okla. against Midwestern State.

If ENMU wins, the Zias will take on the winner of the Central Oklahoma-Missouri Southern match in the Regional Final on Saturday (May 8). The Zias recently took fourth place at the Lone Star Conference Tournament (Apr. 23-25).
