GREYHOUNDS FALL TO TAMU-KINGSVILLE
KINGSVILLE, TX — The revived Texas A&M-Kingsville offense pounded its way to 452 yards — all on the ground — as the Javelinas defeating visiting Eastern New Mexico, 42-7, on Sat., Oct. 30, at Javelina Stadium.

TAMU-Kingsville, which struggled early in the year but gained 387 yards last week, won for the second game in a row and improved to 3-6, 3-4 in the LSC South. ENMU fell to 6-3, 4-3 in the LSC South.

The Javelinas scored the only points of the first half to build a 14-0 lead. Running back Derrick Foster scored both TDs on runs of 47 yards and 7 yards. Gregg Johnson added both extra points.

ENMU had the first chance to score after taking the opening kickoff at its own 26-yard line. The Greyhounds drove to the TAMUK 20-yard line, but Jeff Wareing’s 37-yard field goal attempt was no good. Kingsville missed a pair of first half field goal by Johnson — a 35-yarder in the first quarter and a 36-yarder in the second period.

Kingsville increased its lead to 27-0 with two additional scores in the third quarter. Mack Pittman scored on a 1-yard run with 9:40 remaining in the stanza to complete a 9-play, 80-yard drive to open the half.

Later in the quarter, Aleric Clark returned a punt 59 yards for his first touchdown of the season. Johnson converted the PAT following Pittman’s score, but his extra point attempt following the touchdown by Clark failed.

Back-up quarterback James Williams (So., Earth, TX/Springlake-Earth H.S.) led ENMU on its only touchdown drive late in the third quarter and early in the final stanza. Williams drove the Greyhounds 80 yards in 9 plays, and scored his second touchdown of the season on a 2-yard run with 13:41 left.

The Javelinas clinched the win by answering Eastern’s score with a 12-play drive that consumed 7:23 off the clock. Pittman scored his second touchdown of the day to complete the drive with a 1-yard run. Ahmad Carter caught a 2-point conversion pass from Abel Gonzalez for a 35-7 advantage. Estebanon Barnes added a 1-yard TD run for the Javelinas with 1:57 left in the game.

Foster led TAMU-Kingsville’s rushing attack with 213 yards on 18 carries. Pittman added 92 yards on 16 carries. Overall, the Javelinas rushed for 452 yards on 57 carries, an average of 7.9 yards per rush.

TAMUK was 0 for 3 passing, as Lamar Amos went 0 for 2 and Gonzalez was 0 for 1. The 0 passing yards tied an ENMU defensive record previously set against Colorado Western on Oct. 20, 1962 and against Western New Mexico on Nov. 7, 1993.

The Greyhounds gained just 136 rushing yards on 42 carries, the team’s lowest rushing total of the season. Williams led all ENMU rushers with 58 yards on 8 carries. Antoine Lacy (Jr., RB, Richmond, CA/Contra Costa J.C.) added 38 yards on 7 carries, and Bruce Hatch (Sr., FB, Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) rushed for 30 yards on 7 carries. Starting quarterback Bobby Rodriguez (Sr., Santa Teresa, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) completed 3 of 7 passes for 63 yards. Williams completed 1 of 2 passes, a 42-yarder to wide receiver Brian Weimer (Jr., Clovis, NM/Clovis H.S.) during the touchdown drive.

Defensively, the Greyhounds were led by sophomore free safety Waylon Mayfield (Andrews, TX/Andrews H.S.), who recorded 7 tackles and 4 assists for 11 total tackles. Defensive end Myckael Dorise (Jr., Detroit, MI/Butte C.C.) added 4 tackles and 6 assists, including one tackle for a loss. Senior middle linebacker Michael Walton (Earth, TX/Springlake- Earth H.S.) recorded 7 solo tackles and 2 assists.

For Kingsville, Jonathan Heyward and Cephus Scott topped the defense with 9 total tackles. Heyward recorded 5 tackles and 4 assists, and Scott added 3 tackles and 6 assists. The Javelinas registered 2 quarterback sacks and 7 tackles for losses.

Eastern New Mexico will look to return to the win column when the Greyhounds host archrival West Texas A&M in the annual Wagon Wheel game on Sat., Nov. 6. Kickoff at Greyhound Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m. (Mountain). West Texas currently leads the all-time series, 7-6, following a 13-10 victory in Canyon, Texas last year.
