ENMU REACHES 24-9 WITH 3-1 WIN OVER MESA
Zias Rally After Losing First Game of Match

PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University lost the first game of its match with Mesa State College, but the Zias rallied for three straight wins to defeat the Mavericks, 7-15, 15-6, 16-14, 15-3, for their second victory at Greyhound Arena today (Oct. 30). ENMU downed Tarleton State 15-11, 11-15, 15-11, 15-9 in an afternoon match.

The non-conference win over Mesa State improved the Zias to 24-0 on the season. Mesa State dropped to 11-15 overall. Eastern had just 9 kills and 11 kill errors in the first game, as the Mavericks turned a 7-6 lead into a 15-7 victory.

The Zias rebounded in the second game, crunching 19 kills to win, 15-6. Heather DesMarais (Sr., RS, Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College) had 6 kills and Maricela Santos (Sr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) added 5 kills during the second game.

The third game was a battle. ENMU earned 21 kills and MSC added 20. Mesa State led 6-2, but Eastern rallied to take an 11-9 lead. Later, Mesa State was in front, 14-11, but Aubrey Gladstone (Sr., MB, Kennewick, WA/Columbia Basin) earned her 8th kill of the game, and the Mavericks had three kill errors, as ENMU scored 5 straight for a 16-14 victory.

The Zias built a 9-1 lead in the fourth game and were never challenged by Mesa State. Christabell Mariner (Fr., MB, Pago Pago, Am. Samoa/Tafuna H.S.) earned 6 of her 9 kills during the game. ENMU won the game 15-3.

DesMarais led the Zias with 17 kills and a .385 hitting percentage. Cobos, who had just 3 kills in the first game, finished with 15 kills and a match-high 31 digs. She also earned 2 aces and 3 block assists. ENMU also received 10 kills, 23 digs and 6 total blocks from Gladstone. Setter Lindsey Davison (Sr., Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) had 54 assists and 14 digs. She increased her ENMU career record for assists to 2,745.

Mesa State’s Erin Fiack achieved a triple double with 11 kills, 41 assists and 10 digs. Emily Flint earned 14 kills and 4 block assists, and Lindsay Dumas contributed 9 kills and a team-high 30 digs. Sarah Dunn added 9 kills and 23 digs.

Eastern New Mexico concludes its 5-match homestand and its regular season schedule on Sat., Nov. 6, when the Zias host Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference match. Game time at Greyhound Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (Mountain).
