ZIAS DEFEAT TAMU-KINGSVILLE, 16-14, 15-8, 15-12 ENMU Takes 2nd Place in LSC South
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University Zias defeated visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville, 16-14, 15-8, 15-12, at Greyhound Arena on Sat., Nov. 6 to earn second place in the Lone Star Conference South Division at 8-4 and finish the regular season with a 25-9 overall record. TAMU-Kingsville fell to 14-21 overall and 4-8 in the LSC South.

The Zias earned one of three South Division berths into the LSC Tournament, which will be held at West Texas A&M, Nov. 11-13. ENMU will take on the #3 team in the North (TBA) at 5:00 p.m. (Central) on Thur., Nov. 11. The winner will take on North Division champion Cameron University on Fri., Nov. 12 at 5:00 p.m. (Central). The LSC Tournament championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. (Central) on Sat., Nov. 13.

Against TAMU-Kingsville, the Zias received 15 kills and 13 digs from Tanya Heyko (Jr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.). Maricela Santos (Sr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) contributed 13 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while Heather DesMarais (Sr., RS, Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College) added 11 kills and 3 block assists.

ENMU’s Aubrey Gladstone (Jr., MB, Kennewick, WA/Columbia Basin) earned 10 kills and a match high .529 hitting percentage to go with 16 digs and 4 block assists. Senior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) provided 52 assists, increasing her ENMU career record to 2,797. Davison also upped her season assist total to 1,390. She needs just 17 assists in the LSC Tournament to tie the ENMU single season record of 1,407, which she set last year.

TAMU-Kingsville was led by Kenisha Reaux, with 15 kills and 15 digs. Sherri Cain and Kim Martinez provided 10 kills apiece. Martinez also supplied a match high 24 digs, while Courtney Gamble added 33 assists and 16 digs for the Lady Javelinas.

The Zias led 3-0 in Game #1, but later trailed 11-8. ENMU took a 13-12 advantage on a kill by Heyko, before the Lady Javelinas regained the lead, 14-13. The Zias won, 16-14, as DesMarais, Irma Cobos (Sr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.), and Santos each earned a kill. The Zias led 7-3 in the second game. TAMUK pulled within 10-8, but ENMU scored the next 5 points for a 15-8 triumph.

In the third game, ENMU rallied from a 9-2 deficit to win 15-12. The Zias tied the game, 9-9, with five points on Gladstone’s serve, and eventually led 11-9. The game was tied 12-12, when Heyko, DesMarais and Cobos completed the match with consecutive kills.
