ENMU DEFEATS CENTRAL OKLAHOMA, 3-1
Zias Advance to LSC Tournament Semifinals
CANYON, TX — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma, Nov. 11 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament at West Texas A&M University. Game scores were 15-12, 15-8, 13-15, 15-10.

The Zias improved to 26-9 on the season, and advanced into a semifinal match against Cameron University on Fri., Nov. 12 at 4:00 p.m. (Mountain). Central Oklahoma’s season ended at 19-12 overall.

The Zias were paced by senior outside hitter Irma Cobos (Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.), who recorded 14 kills and 22 digs. She also registered 2 of Eastern’s 4 service aces. Cobos led five Zias in double-digit kills.

The others were senior middle blocker Maricela Santos (Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) with 13 kills, junior middle blocker Aubrey Gladstone (Kennewick, WA/Columbia Basin College) with 11 kills, senior right-side hitter Heather DesMarais (Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin) with 10 kills, and junior outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) also with 10 kills.

Santos achieved match-highs with a .429 hitting percentage and 7 total blocks, while Gladstone hit .391 and provided 15 digs. Freshman Annette Luafalamena-Tanielu (DS, Kaunakakai, HI/Eastern Arizona) added 13 digs.

Setter Lindsey Davison (Sr., Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) also contributed. She earned 51 assists, 10 digs, and 6 kills, while leading an ENMU attack that finished with a .259 team hitting percentage. Davison broke her own school record for assists in one season, as her 1999 total reached 1,441. She set the previous record of 1,407 last year.

The first game was tied 8-8 before the Zias eventually claimed a 15-12 victory. In the second game, ENMU trailed 7-2, but rallied for a 15-8 win by finishing the game with a 13-1 run. The Lady Bronchos took the third game 15-13, after building a 10-4 lead. Eastern New Mexico built a quick 7-0 advantage in the fourth game and also led 11-2. UCO threatened to rally, but the Zias won, 15-10.

For UCO, Alma Brahimaj topped all players with 18 kills. She also had 17 and 4 service aces. Adriana Crovador produced 15 kills and 17 digs, while Lexy Fortner supplied 12 kills, 8 digs and 6 total blocks. The Lady Bronchos recorded 12 service aces, but also committed 16 serving errors.
