ENMU FALLS TO CAMERON IN LSC SEMIFINALS
Zias finish season at 26-10 overall

CANYON, TX — The ENMU volleyball team provided an outstanding challenge to Cameron University in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Tournament at West Texas A&M on Fri., Nov. 12. Even so, the Lady Aggies edged the Zias, 15-9, 10-15, 17-15, 15-13, to earn a berth in the LSC Championship Match. Cameron improved to 27-4 on the season, while ENMU concluded its season at 26-10. Cameron will take on West Texas A&M for the LSC Championship tomorrow (Sat., Nov. 13).

WTAMU defeated Abilene Christian, 15-2, 15-12, 15-13, in the other semifinal on Friday. Last year, Cameron slipped past West Texas A&M in five games in the LSC title match. The Lady Aggies took a quick 7-0 lead in the first game. ENMU also trailed 8-1, before rallying to within two points, 9-7. The Zias never got closer, as Cameron took a 15-9 win.

Eastern repeated its slow start in the second game, falling behind, 6-0. The Zias rallied again, this time tying the match at 9-9. Each team added a point, then ENMU scored the next five for a 15-10 triumph. In the third game, ENMU build a 12-3 advantage, but the Lady Aggies gradually reduced the lead. Cameron eventually tied the game, 13-13, and also led, 14-13. ENMU earned a game point of its own at 15-14, before Cameron produced the next three points to win, 17-15.

The Lady Aggies zoomed out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth game. Later, ENMU was behind, 10-3, but the Zias scored the next 8 points and led 11-10 following a kill by Tanya Heyko (Jr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.). The game remained close the rest of the way, with Cameron breaking a 12-12 tie on its way to a 15-13 victory.

Lindsey Davison (Sr., Setter, Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College) recorded 57 assists for the Zias. She finished the season with a school record 1,498 assists, breaking her own record from 1998. She also concluded her career as ENMU’s all-time assist leader with 2,905 assists.

Irma Cobos (Sr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) earned 11 kills and 18 digs. Cobos finished second at ENMU in career kills (1,267), aces (132) and digs (1,653).

Both of Eastern’s middle blockers performed well, as Aubrey Gladstone (Jr., MB, Kennewick, WA/ Columbia Basin College) contributed 18 kills, 12 digs and 5 block assists, and Maricela Santos (Sr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) added 15 kills, 9 digs and 7 total blocks.

Heyko recorded 14 kills and 18 digs, while Annette Luafalemana-Tanielu (Jr., DS, Kaunakakai, HI/Eastern Arizona) led all players with 23 digs.

Cameron was led by Lora Spencer, who pounded out a match-high 26 kills to go with 21 digs. April Brockman achieved 15 kills and 5 total blocks. Megan Carter earned 12 kills, and Maria Gonzalez provided 11 kills and 12 digs.

ENMU finished with a .142 team hitting percentage, while Cameron had a .154 hitting percentage. The Zias registered 98 digs, 2 block solos and 22 block assists. Cameron totaled 90 digs, 6 block solos and 6 block assists.

The Zias concluded the season with the *third most victories in school history (26). ENMU’s two highest victory totals came in 1993 (33-6) and 1991 (27-10). (does not include 1995 record of 33-6).
