ZIAS DEFEAT SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA, 66-49 Katheryne Hickman Scores 17 Points for ENMU
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University Zias finished the first half with a 7-0 run for a 35-26 halftime lead, then maintained their lead throughout the second half, in a 66-49 victory over the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Nov. 27 at Greyhound Arena. ENMU remained undefeated at 3-0 with the win, while SWOSU dropped to 1-3 on the season.

ENMU led just 28-26 before junior post Bobby Wallin (Moriarty, NM/Moriarty H.S.) sank a pair of free throws with 1:09 left in the first half. Wallin scored again with 20 seconds left on a layup for a 32-26 lead.

Ginger Armacost (Fr., G, Lubbock, TX/Abernathy H.S.) intercepted the ensuing in-bounds pass and put in another layup. She was fouled while shooting, and converted the three-point play to give ENMU a 35-26 margin at the break.

The Bulldogs never seriously threatened Eastern during the final 20 minutes. SWOSU was limited to 28.3% shooting (13 of 46) and committed 25 turnovers during the game. ENMU committed 22 turnovers, but converted 40.7% of its shots (22 of 54).

The teams combined for 53 total fouls, as ENMU was whistled for 27 infractions and SWOSU was called for 26 fouls. Eastern sank 21 of 31 free throws, and the Bulldogs made 20 of 32 free throws.

Junior post Katheryne Hickman (San Antonio, TX/Castle Hills Baptist H.S.) scored 17 points to lead ENMU. She was 6 of 10 from the floor and 5 for 5 at the free throw line. Wallin added 12 points, including 8 of 10 at the charity stripe. Wallin also grabbed 7 boards, as the Zias claimed a 43-34 rebounding edge.

Senior post Amanda Hewitt (San Antonio, TX/ Madison H.S.) provided the Zias with 8 points and 6 rebounds. SW Oklahoma was led by Veronique Allese and Kristi Dickerson with 12 points each. Dickerson and teammate Kirl Neptune both fouled out, as did Eastern’s Jenny Conaway (Sr., Post, Midland, TX/South Plains College).

The Zias remain at home for a game on Tues., Oct. 30 against Cameron University at 6:00 p.m. (MST). The game is part of a double-header that also includes the ENMU men against New Mexico Highlands University at 8:00 p.m. (MST).
