SAMANIEGO AND HARRIS LEAD ENMU CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS AT TEXAS TECH
LUBBOCK, TX — Veronica Samaniego (Sr., Sonora, TX/Sonora H.S.) placed 11th in the women’s race, and Hawk Harris (Sr., Hobbs, NM/Hobbs H.S.) finished 13th in the men’s race, to lead the ENMU cross country teams at the Texas Tech Invitational, Oct. 9 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock, Texas.

Eastern’s women earned 4th place out of 5 teams, while the ENMU men finished 5th out of 6 teams. New Mexico Highlands won the women’s team title with a score of 32. Texas Tech’s “B” Team (the “A” Team rested for an NCAA pre-national meet next week) took second at 52, and was followed by New Mexico State in third with a score of 59. ENMU recorded a team score of 84, and Wayland Baptist rounded out the event at 124.

In the men’s division, South Plains College took first place, earning a score of 30. New Mexico Highlands was second (54), New Mexico State took third (64), Southwest Indian Polytechnic finished fourth (96), ENMU took fifth (132) and Wayland Baptist finished sixth (151).

Samaniego’s 11th-place time was 21:30 over the 5-kilometer course. Mindy Clark (Jr.,Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) took 15th place for ENMU with a time of 22:17. Colleen Banet (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado H.S.) finished 17th in 23:30, Jerri Begay (So., Crownpoint, NM/Crownpoint H.S.) took 20th place in 24:28 and Lindsey Pfaff (Fr., Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos H.S.) claimed 21st place in 24:38.

Harris recorded a personal best time of 27:48 while taking 13th in the 8-kilometer men’s race. David Gonzalez (So., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) was Eastern’s second finisher, completing the race in 28:32 to place 21st. Michael Sanchez (Fr., Carlsbad, NM/ Carlsbad H.S.) clocked in at 29:03 and took 28th, Juan Castanon (Jr., Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad H.S.) completed the course in 29:47 for 31st place and Stephen Bogue (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Monzano H.S.) finished in 35:22 for 39th place.

The Greyhounds and the Zias are idle this week. They will run at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Meet at East Central University (Ada, Okla.), Oct. 23 at 8:30 a.m. (MDT).
