ANGELO STATE HOLDS OFF HOUNDS, 24-19
PORTALES, NM — Angelo State University held off a fourth quarter rally by the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds to claim a 24-19 Lone Star Conference South Division win, at Greyhound Stadium on Sat., Oct. 9. ASU improved to 4-2 overall and moved into a tie for first place in the LSC South at 3-1.

ENMU fell to 4-2 , 2-2 in the LSC South. Eastern New Mexico trailed 24-7 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Greyhounds scored on a 20-yard run by Antoine Lacy (Jr., RB, Richmond, CA/Contra Costa J.C.) with 10:46 left, and added a 1-yard run by Siegan Keys (Sr., RB, Oakland, CA/Chabot College) at the 4:22 mark.

ENMU missed a pair of two-point conversions, but remained in striking distance with a 24-19 deficit. ASU took over at its own 20-yard line after Eastern’s second TD of the quarter. The Rams achieved two first downs and gained 27-yard on 6 plays before punting.

ENMU had just 2:02 on the clock and no timeouts when the Hounds gained possession at their own 25. Bruce Hatch (Sr., FB, Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield H.S.) picked up 4 yards on first down. With no timeouts, the Greyhounds were then forced to throw the ball, and three consecutive passes fell incomplete. ASU ran out the clock to record the win.

Hatch led Eastern with 117 yards on 13 carries, while Lacy recorded 54 yards on 9 carries. ENMU, which had 20 carries for just 50 yards at halftime, ended the game with 44 carries for 203 yards. ASU was led by sophomore running back Ben Reid, who gained 127 yards on 20 carries, helping the Rams finish with 238 yards on 53 carries.

The first quarter ended with ASU leading 14-0. The Rams drove 79 yards on 8 plays following the opening kickoff, with Shock Davis hauling in a 41-yard pass from Brannon Smith for the touchdown at the 12:02 mark. Angelo State drove 55 yards on 9 plays later in the quarter. Derrick King scored on a 1-yard run to complete the drive. Eastern produced a quick-strike touchdown early in the second quarter.

ENMU quarterback Bobby Rodriguez (Sr., Santa Teresa, NM/Las Cruces H.S.) threw a 67-yard pass to Cale Sanders (Fr., WR, Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.), who scored his second TD of the year.

The Greyhounds trailed 14-7 at the half. ASU had 192 total yards at the break, compared to 169 yards for the Hounds. Eastern outgained the Rams 205-114 in the second half, but Reid rushed for 100 yards on 13 carries to help preserve ASU’s lead.

After ENMU was unable to achieve a first down to start the third quarter, the Rams drove 64 yards on 3 plays for a 21-7 advantage. Reid provided the touchdown on a 49-yard scamper. Chris Meadows kicked the PAT. Angelo State did not earn another first down until less than 4:00 remained in the game.

Even so, the Rams increased their lead to 24-7 with a 22-yard field goal by Meadows with 2:09 left in the third quarter. The field goal came four plays after Todd Miller intercepted a tipped pass at the ENMU 16-yard line and returned it to the 7.
