ENMU WINS BOTH MATCHES ON FINAL DAY OF TEXAS WOMAN’S INVITATIONAL
DENTON, TX — The ENMU Zias volleyball team routed St. Edwards, 15-5, 15-1, 15-6, and easily defeated host Texas Woman’s, 12-15, 15-0, 15-2, 15-6, during the second day of the Texas Woman’s University Invitational, Sat., Oc.t 9 in Denton, Texa. The Zias improved to 17-5 with the wins.

Senior right side hitter Heather DesMaris (Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College) led the Zias with 10 kills, and made only 2 hittting errors on 22 total attacks for a .364 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Irma Cobos (Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) added 9 kills, and junior middle blocker Aubrey Gladstone produced 7 kills and 8 digs. Tanya Heyko (Jr., OH, Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) led all players with 16 digs. Lindsey Davison (Sr., S, Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin) recorded 33 assists and earned 11 digs.

Katy Berdoll topped St. Edwards with 8 kills. Christy Jones recorded 7 kills, and Julie Hoang supplied 13 digs. ENMU limited St. Edwards to a .109 team hitting percentage, while the Zias finished the match with a .356 hitting percentage. Against Texas Woman’s, the Zias received 9 kills each from Cobos and DesMarais. Heyko provided a match-high 10 digs, while Maricela Santos (Sr., MB, Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) achieved 8 block assists. Santos also registered 6 kills and earned a .417 hitting percentage.

ENMU dominated the final three games, and finished the match with 39 kills, 13 service aces and 20 block assists. TWU connected for 34 kills, but also committed 34 attacking errors. Tara Balak led the Pioneers with 10 kills. Heather Nixon had 7 kills. Davison was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Other All-Tournament selections were Balak of TWU, Lynsey Coleman of Midwestern State, Erin Holahan of Daemon College, Christy Jones of St. Edwards, Jelena Miljanic of Tarleton State, Bridget Pyles of Arkansas Tech, Missy Raitz of TAMU-Commerce and Yvette Villanueva of Incarnate Word. Miljanic, an outside hitter, was chosen MVP.

Eastern returns to action on Tues., Oct. 12, when the Zias host West Texas A&M in a key LSC South Division match at Greyhound Arena. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. (MDT).
