ALLSUP’S/ENMU 25th ANNUAL PORTALES PAVEMENT POUNDER RESULTS
PORTALES, NM — The Allsup’s/ENMU 25th Annual Portales Pavement Pounder brought runners from throughout the region to Portales, New Mexico to celebrate a quarter century of road racing on Sat., Oct. 16. A total of 142 individuals were entered in the four races included in the event. Runners came from three states to participate.

The start and finish of every race was near Greyhound Arena on the Eastern New Mexico University campus. Race distances were 1 mile, 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers and 13 miles (half marathon). Each race featured a men’s division and a women’s division, plus seven age groups in each category. The top three overall men’s and women’s champions for each race were awarded finely crafted Nambe plates.

1-MILE RACE
The overall men’s champion in the 1-mile race was Cassidy Tibbets of Portales, NM in a time of 5:22. Jimmy Samarron from Levelland, TX took second, Pablo Pacheco from Tucumcari, NM was third, Donald Gleason of Santa Fe, NM was fourth, and Lupe Naceanceno of Portales, NM took fifth place.

The women’s champion in the 1-mile race was Cathy Hitt of Perryton, TX . She completed the race in 6:12. Second place was earned by Sarah Aragon from Tucumcari, NM. Third place was awarded to Natassja Torrez of Tucumcari, NM. Fourth place went to Kristy Reid from Tucumcari, NM and fifth place was earned by Tina Smith of Tucumcari, NM.

5-KILOMETER RACE
The winner of the men’s division in the 5-kilometer race was Goerge Chavez from Tucumcari, NM, who clocked in with a time of 16:05. Rene Gonzales from Levelland, TXwas second and Joshua Baca from Carlsbad, NM was third. Marc Calbert of Tucumcari, NM took fourth and Rudy Quiroz from Lovington, NM was fifth.

Charlene Cabert from Tucumcari, NM won the women’s 5K division in a time of 20:15. She was followed by Connie Hinojos of Rio Rancho in second, Lindsay Bakke of Tucumcari, NM in third, Alisha Fitzgerald of Portales, NM in fourth, and Kari Bernard of Portales, NM in fifth.

10 KILOMETER RACE
The men’s division 10-kilometer race was won byWalter Marler from Carlsbad, NM with a time of 37:47. First place in the women’s division of the 10-Kilometer race was awarded to Cris Dimitroff from Fort Sumner, NM with a time of 44:05. Other top men’s finishers were Joey Piotrowicze of Los Alamos, NM in second place, Jesse Piotrowicze of Los Alamos, NM in third place, Gary Read of Los Alamos, NM in fourth place, and Brendon Sehorn of Portales, NM in fifth place.

In the women’s race, Dimitroff was followed by Laurie Pettigrew from Fort Sumner, NM in second, Teresa Aragon from Santa Fe, NM in third, and Gay Goettsch from Farwell, TX in fourth.

1/2 MARATHON
The men’s half marathon was won by Michael Broderick of Albuquerque, NM, who finished the 13-mile course in 1:19:44. Second place went to Thomas Aragon of Tucumcari, NM, and third place was won by Ted Atkins of Espanola, NM. Fourth place was earned by Gilbert Garcia of Clovis, NM and fifth place was recorded by Gerald Stuber of Witchata Falls, TX.

In the women’s half marathon, Tina Broderick of Santa Fe, NM was the overall champion completing the race in 1:52:01. Margaret Stuber of Wichita Falls, TX took second place, followed by Kim Collins of Portales, NM who claimed third.

At the conclusion of each race, the runners were treated to water, fresh fruit and soft drinks. When all four races were completed, drawings were held to giveaway special prizes including an AIWA Stereo with surround sound speakers and remote control CD, a Coke-a-Cola BBQ grill and cooler, Denver Bronco’s and Dallas Cowboy’s jerseys, as well as Allsup’s T-shirts.

The event was sponsored by Allsup’s Convenience Stores and by Eastern New Mexico University. Allsup’s has sponsored a road race in the Portales or Clovis area since 1975. ENMU became an official sponsor last year. Other sponsors included Tropicana, Sparklett’s Gatorade, Sprint, Pepsi and Affliated Foods Inc.
