JAMES STEWART NAMED LSC SOUTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
PORTALES, NM — James Stewart, a junior defensive end at Eastern New Mexico University, has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his efforts in ENMU’s 27-13 victory over Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, on Sat., Oct. 16. Stewart helped the Greyhounds end a two-game losing streak and improve to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the LSC South.

The Greyhounds are part of a four-way tie for second place in the LSC South, and trail division leader Angelo State by one game. Stewart (6’1”, 228 lbs., Anton, TX/N.M. Military Institute) recorded 7 unassisted tackles and earned 1 assist for 8 total tackles, as Eastern New Mexico spoiled the Texans’ Homecoming game.

One of his tackles was behind the line of scrimmage and resulted in a 5-yard loss for TSU. Stewart also scored a touchdown against the Texans for the second consecutive year. Last year, he returned a fumbled punt 15 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half, giving the Hounds a 21-7 lead in their 42-7 victory at Greyhound Stadium.

In Saturday’s game, he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 4:22 left in the third quarter, as ENMU took a 21-13 lead. The special teams touchdown came less than two minutes after the Greyhounds marched 65 yards in 10 plays to take a 14-13 lead. Junior running back Antoine Lacy (Richmond, CA/ Contra Costa J.C.) scored on a 24-yard run to complete the drive with 6:05 left in the quarter.

For the season, Stewart has made 18 solo tackles and 13 assists for 31 total tackles. He has recorded 8 tackles for losses (43 yards lost), including 3 quarterback sacks (27 yards lost). He has also forced 2 fumbles.

ENMU returns home on Sat., Oct. 23 to take on Texas A&M-Commerce in a Lone Star Conference South Division game. Kickoff at Greyhound Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m. (Mountain).
