EASTERN NEW MEXICO SWEEPS WESTERN NEW MEXICO, 15-12, 15-9, 15-4
PORTALES, NM — In a battle of cross-state rivals, Eastern New Mexico University defeated Western New Mexico University, 15-12, 15-9, 15-4, at Greyhound Arena on Mon., Oct. 18. The win improved ENMU to 18-8 on the season, while WNMU fell to 17-10. Eastern has won two of three matches with Western this season.

The Zias were led by four players with double digit kills. Outside hitter Irma Cobos (Sr., Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.), middle blocker Aubrey Gladstone (Jr., Kennewick, WA/ Columbia Basin College) and outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Jr., Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.) each recorded 11 kills. Right-side hitter Heather DesMarais (Sr., Yakima, WA/Columbia Basin College) provided 10 kills.

Senior setter Lindsey Davison (Kelso, WA/Columbia Basin College), who set ENMU’s career assist record over the weekend, supplied 49 assists, and now has 2,443 assists in her two years at Eastern.

Davison also registered 12 digs, while Annette Luafalemana-Tanielu (Jr., OH, Kaunakakai, HI/Eastern Arizona) added 10 digs. Heyko had 14 digs, and Gladstone matched Davison with 12 digs.

The Zias hit .263, led by Heyko’s .476 hitting percentage. Cobos hit .391, Gladstone hit .360 and DesMarais hit .333.

Eastern limited the Mustangs to a .126 team attack percentage. WNMU received 11 kills from Dana Dietrich and 10 kills from Heather Preston. Tiffany Flanigan added 7 kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Dietrich led the Mustangs with 14 digs. Heather Komernicky contributed 13 digs and Joelle Simpson added 12 digs.

In the opener, WNMU battled back from a 12-5 deficit of its own to cut Eastern’s lead to 13-12. A solo block by Gladstone and a kill error by WNMU resulted in a 15-12 win for the Zias.

In the second game, ENMU took a 15-9 victory. In the third game, Eastern scored four straight points to break a 3-3 tie, then took a 12-3 lead on its way to a 15-4 triumph. ENMU will play in the Lady Buff Challenge at West Texas A&M this weekend.

The Zias will play Texas Woman’s at 9:00 a.m. (MST) and Cameron at 3:00 p.m. (MST) on Fri., Oct. 22. Eastern takes on Central Oklahoma at 4:00 p.m. (MST) on Sat., Oct. 23.
