STILES AND TURNER CLAIM 5TH PLACE IN DOUBLES AT ITA/ROLEX NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
MEMPHIS, TN — Today was a good day for the Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team at the ITA/Rolex NCAA Division II National Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. Sophomore Layla Turner (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) won her consolation semifinals match.

Turner and doubles partner Julie Stiles (Sr., Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) won two matches — in the consolation semifinals and the consolation championship — to take 5th place in the prestigious event.

Overall, it was a 3-0 day for the Zias, with Turner awaiting the consolation singles final on Sat., Oct. 23. Only eight singles players and eight doubles teams from NCAA Division II colleges and universities qualified for the ITA/Rolex National Tournament.

Each participant had to win an ITA/Rolex regional title to advance to the national level. Turner opened Friday’s successful schedule with a 6-2, 6-4 singles victory over Rachel Key of Presbyterian College (S.C.).

Turner will take on Danielle Faretta of Bloomsburg University (Pa.) in the 5th place match on Saturday morning (Oct. 23). Following her singles victory, Turner combined with Stiles to win back-to-back doubles matches.

In the consolation semifinal, Stiles and Turner breezed past Angie Henricks and Hagar Levy of Gardner-Webb, 6-0, 6-2. Stiles and Turner then won the consolation championship with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Jennifer Garvey and Sharrie Kindig of Ferris State University (Mich.).

The ITA/Rolex NCAA Division II National Tournament concludes tomorrow (Sat., Oct. 23). All tournament matches are being played at the Racquet Club of Memphis or at Rhodes College.

The champions of the NCAA Division II event will remain in Memphis through Sun., Oct. 24 to compete in the Rolex “Super Bowl”, which matches the NCAA Division II singles and doubles champions against champions from NCAA Division III, the NAIA and the NJCAA.
