ENMU DEFEATS WAYLAND BAPTIST, 15-12, 15-5, 15-8
PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University Zias improved to 21-9 overall with a 15-12, 15-5, 15-8 non-conference victory over visiting Wayland Baptist University, Oct. 26 at Greyhound Arena. Wayland Baptist fell to 13-15 on the season.

ENMU was led by junior outside hitter Tanya Heyko (Salem, OR/Chemeketa C.C.), who led all players with 16 kills and 12 digs. Irma Cobos (Sr., OH, Kermit, TX/Kermit H.S.) added 10 kills and 10 digs for the Zias. Aubrey Gladstone recorded 9 kills, 8 digs and 5 total blocks. The Zias earned 48 kills and a .210 team hitting percentage.

Wayland Baptist received 9 kills and 8 digs from Serenity King (Sr., OH, Pampa, TX). Kari Gibson contributed 7 kills, while Caryn Clem had 19 assists and 11 digs for the Lady Pioneers. WBU was limited to a .048 team attack percentage.

The Zias took an 11-3 lead in the opening game, but Wayland Baptist rallied by scoring 7 unanswered points. The run, which included one kill and one block, was aided by four kill errors and a ball handling error by ENMU.

Eastern New Mexico took a 12-10 lead, but Wayland scored twice to tie the game. A pair of kill errors by the Lady Pioneers gave the Zias a 14-12 advantage before ENMU junior middle blocker Aubrey Gladstone (Kennewick, WA/Columbia Basin College) ended the game with an over-the-shoulder kill. Senior middle blocker Maricela Santos (Laredo, TX/Laredo C.C.) served for all of Eastern’s points — including an ace — in a 5-0 run to start the second game.

The Zias increased their lead to 10-4, then finished the game with a 5-1 run. In the third game, ENMU led 3-0 and 6-2. Wayland Baptist never got closer than three points (8-5) the rest of the way. Heyko earned 8 of her 16 kills during the third game.

The Zias return to action on Fri., Oct. 29 in a Lone Star Conference home match against Midwestern State University. Game time at Greyhound Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (Mountain). Wayland Baptist hosts Southern Nazarene in Plainview, Texas on Fri., Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m. (Central).
