TURNER AND STILES REACH DOUBLES FINAL AT REGIONAL ROLEX TOURNAMENT
Turner also Advances to Semis in Doubles

PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico sophomore Layla Turner (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union H.S.) and senior Julie Stiles (Roswell, NM/Goddard H.S.) have advanced to the championship match of the doubles bracket at the NCAA Division II Regional Rolex Tournament in Greeley, Colo.

Turner has also reached the semifinals in singles. Action continues on Sun., Oct. 3. In doubles, Turner and Stiles were seeded #1. A total of 26 teams were entered in the doubles bracket. Turner and Stiles receive a bye, then defeated Kasey Hawkins and Kristen Chumley of Abilene Christian, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

In the quarterfinals Turner and Stiles defeated Michelle Mathiesen and Patrice Shields of Colo.-Colorado Springs, 6-1, 6-2. Turner and Stiles defeated Lacy Johnson and Jenny Wallace of ACU in the semis, 6-2, 6-1. They will face either Jodie Sato and White of Northern Colorado or Daniela Ivana and Silvia Torres of Southern Colorado in the title match at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Turner began the tournament seeded #1 in the 53-player singles draw. She receive a first-round bye, then defeated Andi Wildner of Abilene Christian, 6-4, 6-3. In the Round of 16 she defeated Ashley Beatty of Southern Colorado, 6-2, 6-0, and in the quarterfinals she swept past Sarah Taweel of ACU, 6-1, 6-4. She will take on either Portia White of Northern Colorado or Chumley of ACU in the semifinals, Sunday at 8:00 a.m.

Stiles lost her first round singles match to highly-regarded Lacy Jordan of ACU. Stiles then won three consolation matches — losing just six games in six sets — to reach the semifinals of the consolation draw. Amanda Wells (Fr., Pampa, TX/Pampa H.S.) of ENMU has also reached the consolation semifinals and will take on Stiles on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. One of ENMU’s players will advance into the consolation final.
